Seed Question(s)

First off, let me say I'm new(this is my first post)and I hope to learn a lot by being here (I'm a beginner). A friend of mine received some seeds and I told him to soak them like all other types of seeds (they were a 'mystery' strain). They were a middle-dark grey, and have been soaking for 4 days. They're now almost grey/black and haven't broken the shell yet. I'm curious because I've never seen any seeds change color like that (I've haven't seen many of these...seeds), is it normal?

Are they rotting? What are the temps where he's germinating them? Can you post a pic? I've had seeds take longer then 4 days, but have never really noticed a color change in them enough to be concerned about Never seen em turn black either. But I start in rockwool so I don't see the seeds too often after I start germination.

He used room temp. water (about 75f usually). and it's changed daily (don't know if it matters), but they're not really black...deep/dark green tinged with paler green around the edge. I'd put up a pic, but the three grey ones that he used have already changed so I have no reference before he germanitated them. Personally, I don't know if they're rotted, oh, plus they've gotten bigger (should've said that before).

dude you should only soak them for 24 hours max then put them in a paper towel. Some seeds will survive being soaked for longer but \most seeds would end up being pretty mushy and rotten.

For the record, you only really need to germinate seeds that are of questionable origin. I mean, if they're from a trusted breeder, you can just stick them right in some damp soil (if you're growing soil I guess) and let it roll.
Germinating (for me) is only to test the viability of questionable seeds It doesn't really expedite things IME.
Just my 2 cents.

Why should that mean it isn't real?
