My first grow. *COMPLETED*

I thought I would share some pics of my first grow. These were grown from various bag seeds donated from a friend. They are between 3 and 4 weeks old in these photos. Sorry for the poor picture quality, I hope to have better pics tomorrow.

Me too. My friend claims they came from quality bud, so we'll see.
By the way these were taken about 7 days ago and they have doubled in size.

I'm using a bank of five 24" T17 fluros. Two daylight and three grow bulbs. I hope to upgrade to a 400W MH as soon as I can get the light fixture built.

Will they run on the same ballast? I have 3 400W MH ballasts on hand and would sure like to use them. They were free.

Your absolutely right about about the wiring, I know because I design for a living. Anyone attempting to rig up their own HID system should do some research into high voltage before attempting any such project.
I haven't decided if I'm going buy a light fixture or get off my ass and build one myself, luckily the ballasts my industry uses are considerably cheaper and far more durable than those used in the horticultural industry. They just require a little extra work to make them usable indoors.

Anyway here are some pictures I took yesterday. The plants have grown considerably since my first set of pics. However ,what you will see here is my babies after being topped, and I'm also trying my hand at some low stress training so the plants will look a little awkward. Also note that the browning you see is where I splashed some nutrient solution on the leaves. The plant is doing well otherwise.

The substrate I'm using at the moment is a 50/50 mix if MGMC and vermiculite. The seeds were started in peat pellets and were then transfered to peat pots once I saw roots growing out from from the pellet. I then dropped the peat pot into the container you see here when the roots started growing out of the bottom of the peat pot.
My nutrient solution ATM is a very dilute mix of Miracle grow and water.
I also keep the lights on 24/0.
If this turns out to be an actual grow log I wouldn't mind if a mod moved this to the appropriate forum. I didn't know where this was going to go when I started it.

First the bad news. While attempting to re-pot 2 of my plants I accidentally ripped off too much of the root mass. One died, one is in the hospital. I was finally able to acquire some rooting hormone and whats left of the living plant is convalescing in the poor-mans cloning chamber you see here:
Yes, thats a CO2 generator you see in the background.
Now the good news. I was able to install my light fixture and this was what I ended up with:

Some notes on the FIM technique. I found that removing too much of the growth tip is BETTER than not removing enough. If you don't remove enough you might stall the vertical growth of the plant while it puts energy into leaves that wont grow big enough to support themselves. The plant in the green container above suffered from this. As soon as I clipped the stunted section the plant regained the rate of growth I saw when it was younger. A successful FIM:

This picture is the result of my last re-potting. I took two clones from each plant and set them aside in my veg area to preserve what ever genetics I might have.
The two pots in the back are actually tomato plants I might attempt to grow indoors this winter.

On a scale of 1 to 5, last week earned a total of:
Not only did my Ceramic MH bulb blow when I first lit it up, someone I know brought unwanted attention to my place and I got the scared out of me.
Oh well, Lesson learned. Since my last update I tossed all my clones and my male plant. I have yet to troubleshoot my ballast to see what actually went wrong with my new light, but I think I'll get to that tonight.
During the last re-pot I changed my soil to a 40/30/30 mix of vermiculite, soil, and horse manure. I also changed my nutrients to full strength fish emulsion and the bloom formula that was sitting on the shelf next to the emulsion. My girls seem to love it.
Here are my most recent pics, they seem to have come out kind of blurry so I'll try to retake them tonight.

The one on the left is responding well to the training I did in the beginning. It's producing several nice buds that are all proportional in size. The one on the right is producing some spindly buds of all different sizes, it's definitely not the prettiest thing to look at but this was all just a trial run anyway.
Here are some pics of slightly better quality.

The spindly one:

And another of my pretty girl:

So here we are 5 weeks into flower. Everything seems to be going OK except the rate that my leaves are turning yellow and dropping off. Last night I checked the PH of my soil and it seams that it's a little low at 6.1. I will be adding calcium carbonate at watering to adjust my PH to my 6.5 target. Anyway here are some more crappy pictures. I'm definitely getting a new camera for my next grow.

Mrs. Tall and Skinny:

And a taste of things to come:

Well I've been doing a little research and it appears on close inspection of my leaves that the deficiencies I'm experiencing are no less than all of them. I suspect the PH drop causing this is do to the high manure loading I used in my soil mixture. I've flushed the soil twice in the last 4 days and that seems to have stabilized the deterioration of my plants. Now I'm faced with another problem. The calcium carbonate I used to raise the PH doesn't dissolve well in water and and now my PH is stabilizing around 7.5, and I'm not going to flush or add anything else until my soil has a chance to dry out some. I did use some sodium bi-phosphate to try and lower the PH but the buffering capacity of calcium carbonate is going to make that job a lot more difficult.
I did discover something during all of this. A couple of weeks ago I installed red light bulb in my grow closet so I wouldn't disturb my ladies if I had to go in there at night. Now when I look at them with the light on, the damaged parts of the plants glow like they were in a black light(only it's red). The healthy parts of the plants appear is if they were shadows absorbing the red light. Maybe I could use this in the future to determine how healthy the chlorophyll is in my plants, however I don't have a mature healthy plant to test my theory.
The upside of all this is I think my ladies will survive and I've learned loads about what not to do. I wish I could show you all what the buds look like at 600x. There is definitely a thick and healthy trichome forest in there.

Well for at least one of my ladies it's almost harvest time, one week left. As for the other it seems I might be dealing with a sativa dominant strain that might need the full 11-12 week flowering period. At first I thought she was just scrawny, but her buds are filling out nicely and they look no where near as mature as her sisters.
I have finally stabilized my pH to 6.5 and I have had no more leaves drop since last week. Many of the larger leaves show definite signs of an Mg deficiency but they are not deteriorating any more. The growth in and around the buds is a healthy green so I think all might be well.
As far as pictures are concerned I've decided it's an exercise in futility trying to get a shot of my ladies under my MH light. My camera simply hates the spectrum the light gives off. I will post this one to give you an idea of the average size buds I'm seeing on my ladies:

Not much more to say here. I will keep you updated in the progress of the sativa and I will post the yield of the plant I'm harvesting next week.

Well the ladies are chopped and manicured. The sativa (Mrs. Tall and Skinny) probably would have filled out a bit more but the taste testers approve of her potency. Mrs. Phat Buds was ready to harvest, her tricombs were defiantly cloudy under magnification and it was time for us to say goodbye.
I probably should have grown Mrs. Tall and Skinny (sativa) out to maturity but it's time to make room for the next generation.
Well here is a crappy pic of the harvest: Phat Buds:Left Mrs. T&S:Right

I wish I could show you the crystal formations on Mrs. Phat Buds, but my ocular freeze frame SUX. I also wish her clone would have produced roots, but that's a story for another day. Finaly, it was my deepest wish that I could have salvaged the pollen from what was clearly the progeny of a skunk #"?", so that I could mate him with Mrs. Tall and Skinny. The irony is Mrs. T&S was the skunki'st in sent besides the her little cousin, that I've smelled in many, many years.
Incase your wondering what pure indica looks like:
