transporting clones
    #545875 - 04/12/11 11:45 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

So, in the morning, I'm picking up a couple cuttings from a friend and driving across the state with them to my home.

I was wondering what the best way to transport them three hours across the state? I've looked everywhere, and I can't find anything...

They won't be in rockwool. They'll just be simple cuttings w/no roots or anything...

I would then buy some 1x1 rockwool cubes from the hydro shop before you go and transplant them into the cubes..  That is what I did about 10 days ago, I had to transport them across two states

Your friend isn't willing to root them for you? Driving three hours with cuttings not rooted is going to be tough. I took some cuts once and drove 45 minutes home with them and they were still droopy as fuck by the time I got them in the aerocloner. 3 hours might take a real toll on them.

I won't be using rockwool though. I have an aero set up that I'm going to be using. Should I just put them in rockwool to transport them anyways?

Hmm... I was thinking maybe keep them in a little snap-lid container.  Like rubbermaid sandwhich size or something.

Maybe even keep them coolish with a little ice?  You should look up the best way to keep something like fresh cut basil or similar I'm thinking

ALso, what harry said...  I know you're jazzed to use the aerocloner, but you deserve to get something healthy and ready to rock... You can always just wash the roots and still get good use out of your aero setup...

It was really a spur of the moment thing... we were talking about how I'm only days away from being ready, and he offered me some cuttings to take home. I really want a Pandora mother, so I think trying this would be worth it if I can keep em alive...

So I just thought of this:  If your friend is badass he should just let you take the whole branch and finish the cuts yourself when you get home...  Just put the stem in a vase or some kind of container, and then place a plastic bag over it with a couple holes in it (This is how people of the net keep basil fresh BTW) and strap it to the floorboard/seat... You're medical right so it wouldn't be that insane to have a pot-branch riding shotgun?

I have done ths many times . Its simple take a cup of water put cuttings in in in a cooler(the cheap kids soft lunchbag coolers work great) add an icepack to keep them cool(this will prevent wilting stress etc ) take em home and do your thing.  or You can just wrap some wt paper towels wround them and put them in a gal ziplock till you get home..

Here I do this when I have more clones than room.  Put the cutting in a ziplock bag with a mist or two of water from a spray bottle.  Put that into a lunch cooler with enough ice to keep them cool and go for it.

I've kept cutting like this for over a month in the refrigerator with out issues, so I'd think it'd work for you as well.

Well if you have an aerocloner I would say that's definitely going to be their best chance for success. Just take like 10 or 20 cuttings so you'll be sure at least 10 of them make it, and find a way to keep them in a humid environment and keep the cut portion fully wet for the entire drive. like in a vase or a cup of water in a cooler would be your best bet.

Ok, well we're a little over halfway through the trip, and they're still lookin' nice and fresh! Not even a little droopy!

Here's a pic I took last night of their most mature Pandora they have in their flower room. And she's under CFL's to boot!

If these babies turn out anything like their sisters, we're gonna be VERY happy with them!!

So far so good! I am hurriedly assembling my aerocloner while they are chilling in the fridge and my wife is putting up the tent...

I'll have pics up soon!

Well, the good news is that they made it home fine and without wilting at all! The bad news, is that since being put in the aerocloner and under the light, they have all wilted considerably! The onein the center is seeming to perk up a little bit, but I don't know...

I added a little bit of Rootech, and some Root66 to the water, which is for cuttings and clones...

Here's the inside of the bucket...

And here's my first try at a lid... it leaked though, because I screwed up on some of the holes, so I had to make a second one, the grey one that's on it now...

The exact same way I do it. I've had em in the fridge for weeks with no problems. :awedance:
