Campaign to get more people Folding@Home

http://www.shroomery.org/6285/Join-the-Shroomerys-Folding-Home-Team
right now we are currently one of the best contributers to Stanford's protein folding program. However, I have noticed that very few Growerites are members of team Shroomery.
For more information on folding and the benefits, click the link provides
We are currently ranked 143rd of just under 200,000 teams. With your help we can become one of the top 100 teams. And it is all for a good cause.
I will be giving +5 leaf ratings for each member who becomes a member of folding@home and link their results to their profile. I was going to wait until 4/20 to make this post but I think it is important that we get as many people involved as we can. It generally takes 1-2 days to get results reflected to your profile, but remember your contributions are going to help science and to help find cures for many diseases.
If you have any questions, feel free to post them here. Because of how important I think this program is, I will also be making this post at the Shroomery (although they have many members who already contribute to the team and the overall effort)
Please join us.

It uses your PC to help simulate protein folding which may help find the causes and cures for several major diseases.

How exactly does all of this work. I looked into doing this before...but I kinda just gave up, because it was a bit overwhelming to read about...
If someone can really tl;dr it for me, I'd be happy to help...if it doesn't bog down my PC while I'm trying to use it?
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

It only runs when you want it to, and from what I remember it will run in the background and use up your idle processing power. If you have an older PC it might bog it down some while in use.
I'd recommend turning it on while you sleep if you are like me and leave your system running 24/7

Ah, I probably wouldn't be much help then...my laptop is a POS that overheats all the time so I rarely leave it on.
I could still try though

That's what I do, I run it all the time. I never have my computer slow down because of it.
If you want more information on it, click the link provided in the first thread and follow the instructions on how to register for team shroomery and then in your shroomery profile there is a spot for your folding@home username
it is in no way a resource hog. You can modify the settings to use as little of the CPU as you want.

Yeah, I have no clue about how to run it with Linux and I am not sure if there are instructions on it or not. But if you are smart enough to run linux you should be smart enough to figure it out

I used to run this from probably 03 - 08 and I logged probably 10 million points or more, if I had a box I would stil lrun it and I would convert to folding for the growery, however im not going to sit and let my laptop fry for them :p
I used to have a program that I configured at my high school that set it up on every PC in the school, that was a good way to increase production

Growery and Shroomery are still under the same team. it is best that way. It wont fry your laptop any more than running a torrent program will. You control the CPU usage.

Well considering I leave my laptop off most of the time id say it would burn it out faster
not that ive ever had a computer "burn out" from excessive use
shit just runs hot, and you can control the CPU usage but if your not using 100% its not even making a dent compared to the folding farms some people out there have
