im just in the middle of flowering out and selecting mothers right now for a sog perpetual setup, i was wondering if using 2 400 watt mh lamps with cool tubes would be enough power in a 4'x7,1/2' area to give me the compact growth i an looking for ,it would be nice if you can share you sog setup if you dont mind ,
thanks

I don't think so man, I have 2 400W MH in a smaller area; they blow. I had a 300W LED and was more effective then 1 400W MH, I sware. I 3W LED with 100 LEDS = 300 Watts with 12 bands is 800W of MH.
Seriously if you have the money, but some uses LED on craiglist or on eBay man. Get 4 bands if you can, considering the bulbs cost, electricity cost, and the life of the LED it makes no sense now to use HID lighting for veg. Honestly I'm broke as shit and am using HID right now, it's a fucking joke compared to LED.
The shit I bought was from 6 months ago. Today it is even cheaper and 100% is more cost effective. I'll be selling all my HID shit, besides a couple 600W / 1000W HPS for flowering, which will be used in combination with LED lights. Literally the cost of LED is 50% of what it was 6 months ago as well.
Don't take my word for it. I'll be adding some LED lights ASAP and be posting grow logs if you don't believe me. HID for veg blows cock in comparison to LED offered 6 months ago, much less what is offered now. I only tested flowering a little bit, but with the new generation of LED coming out every 6 months they have to be better for flowering at this point as well. I'll show proof in the future.

I have a 4ft x 11 ft area. Last grow used 2 x 1000. This next grow will be adding an other 1000 watt. These lights are hps.
If your just wanting to use one bulb for the complete grow, go with hps.
Grow after this will start(most likely) using a mh for one month. Then switch to hps. This will help in plant development.

well if it's compact growth you're looking for in veg then you should definitely consider 2 x 1000W MH for that room, or at the very least 2 x 600W.
400W will leave you feeling like you're lacking a bit....
And also don't go with cooltubes, get some actual useful reflectors, you'll thank yourself in the end.

what turned you off from cooltubes? The reason I ask is I don't have any personal experience with them, but recall people praising them, pretty highly

Stoned.
For veg go with mh. You got the space for 1000 watts but 600 would do better than 400.

Because they're absolutely useless as reflectors, plain and simple. They're great for keeping the space down because they concentrate the airflow over the bulb so narrowly, but the reflector on them is just an absolute joke. You will literally lose half your light using a cooltube versus a decent reflector. For example, a 600w HPS in a reflector like this;
Will far outperform a 1000w HPS in a cooltube with a reflector like this;
I just think if you're going to be paying for that electricity, you might as well get your moneys worth rather than just throwing away light because you skimped on the reflector. Standard reflectors are the same price as a cool tube, and they all have sealed lenses and airflow capability, so honestly I just see NO advantage to the cooltube
Notice how on the cooltube you can see the bulb, even when you're above the light? But with the real reflectors you can see a line of demarcation on the wall where they perfectly direct every single photon downwards towards the plant?

i already ordered the lamps a few days ago ,oh well ,we,ll try them without the tube and see how the temps are ,but ya, i no more power the better but i dont want to be getting huge bills ether,2 x 1000 watts for flowering and 2 x 1000watts veg would be a big bill

You'd be surprised, that's probably less power than your fridge consumes

How long are you planning on keeping your plants in veg for anyways? From what I understand about SOG, you want to put them into flower as soon as they're rooted, don't you?

It really varies on strain, and how tall you want them to be.

Dude if your doing SOG the idea is basically to flower right after your clones root, at 3-5 in tall... my buddy's SOG setup has 36 plants and he flowers his NL#5 at 5' they turn out to be close to 2ft when mature...and really in SOG you don't want them much taller than that...
