What kind of lighting for seedlings?

The roots have began to crack their way out of my seeds and are ready to be planted in some nice comfy soil. :-)
However, I was wondering what kind of lighting equipment (if any) needs to be used on seedlings after you initially plant them before they sprout and are ready for vegetation. I'm about to make a trip down the hydroponics shop but im not sure if I want to purchase my lighting equipment just yet as im still finishing a few measurements in my grow area and im planing on purchasing a grow tent.
Can seedlings do just fine by a window for a few days? or do they need the 18 hours on/ 6 hours off cycle right away?

The first few plants I ever grew (well, not to completion) I started off on the window sill. They might get a bit stretchy, but I'm sure a few days would be OK.
A few being 4 MAX.

Go to fredmeyers or some big box store, get a shop light. Buy some flouros and stick them under that. I prefer 24 hours of light myself, but 18/6 works well too.

^that's what i was going to say. except that fredmeyers stuff. If you do that you can put those damn things almost right on the tops of the seedlings. Those lights stay real cool. Use the hand test to test the lights. If it's making your hand uncomfortable, you can bet your plants will be too.

yah a T-12 or T-8 setup will run you from 8-15 bucks plus the cost of bulbs. If you don't have enough room for the 4 ft shop lights you can always buy some CFL (the swirly kind you use in lamps) lights and use them to get you through for a bit.

Hey guys, just went the hydroponics shop and picked up the supplies I need for planting. As a medium I got FoxFarm "Light Warrior" and I got some pots that are about a foot tall. Is the medium and the pots ok? The size of the pot seems somewhat big, as most guides I've read have you plant germinated seeds initially in a small 16oz cup. In the end I hear you want a gallon per foot that you grow. I estimate that these pots hold around a gallon of soil, so ill use them for vegetation until they get about a foot tall, then ill replant.
As well, do you only water your seedlings once? Or just water as needed ( dry soil, no water in the tray to be absorbed )?
Thanks for the help guys, im somewhat new at this.

Is it a real place?

Also, I would start in solo cups or something around that size or smaller. I would not start in the big pots you just bought.

Is there a particular reason why? Is it because the roots will grow deep instead of getting stronger?

as already said, you'll want a mellower light for seedlings at the beginning

start in small pots, if your seedlings stretch. when you repot plant too the cotyledon(first set of leaves) water as needed and get some lights

I like my soil to get dry in a reasonable amount of time when they are seedlings, every 2-4 days. After about 2-3 weeks in solo cups, I plant them in their final pot. When I started my seeds in the large final pot, I had overwatering issues.

Ok sounds good.
I have one last question. I'm germinating a few more seeds but this time I'm trying a different method because in 48 hours last time with the paper towel and plate method my seed's initial root didnt get that long ( it was just popping out of the seed ) and this time I'm going to try putting my seeds in a cup of water for 48 hours.
Has anyone had any luck with that technique? Also should I take the seeds out immediately after I see the white root popping out of the seed to avoid "drowning" the seeds? or is it not possible to "drown" them at this stage.
Thank for the help guys.

The paper towle method works just fine the key to it is keeping it in 85f temps. Myself I use a moist dishrag and a freezer bag then I just throw it on top of the fridge. They usually pop within 24 hrs.
As far as light if you need one for just a few days just get a 10 dollar shop light to hold em till you get your regular lights. Once you have the regular lights seedlings don't need any special kind of light they can go under the hid lights from day one.
These seem to do fine starting under a 600watter from day 1.

Just got a 600w HPS setup and I stacked a few boxes to put the plants on top of, under the 600w light. Unfortunetly the hydroponics shop I went to didnt have my growlab in stock, so I had to order it over the internet and its going to take about a week to get here. :-( However, I guess during the first couple weeks reflective walls and an air circulation system are incredibly crucial.
I have my plants about a foot and a half away from the light; is this too close to the plants? The soil feels "warm" but not "hot".

Put your hand just above plants. If warm or hot to your hand.Same for the plant.
