Choosing "basic" strains...

Since I'm looking to breed some new plants, I'm trying to find good breeding stock parents.
I want something that is pretty basic (for example, I notice lots of breeders using a "skunk" mother) to start with...
What I'm saying, is that I don't want to just cross someones jack herer x blueberry X sensi star x master kush. What I'd like to do is make something similar to those - start with my OWN Jack Herer and my OWN Blueberry, then cross them. And from there, cross THOSE with my own Sensi Star x Master Kush combo...you see?
So, I'm looking for "basic" strains, if that makes sense to anyone?
Also, where does "strain piracy" and ethics kick in? If I breed someone elses plants for 5 or 6 generations into my own strain, where does it become *mine*? Know what I mean? It seems like everyone has to start somewhere...do I have to start with bagseed for this to work out? Some random-ass outdoor that I've perfected myself?
I don't want to steal credit for other peoples work...and I certainly don't want any herb community upset with me.

Why should that mean it isn't real?

So your looking to make your own versions of certain strains and cross those? I myself do that a lot.

well, not nessicarily something that has already been done. im looking to eventually make something original. im thinking for my first experiment id like to cross a very sativa chocolope with a very indica blueberry for a 50/50 combo. obviously it will take some time and selective breeding of different phenos but id like to someday get a "chocoberry" maybe.

Well your close in the strain choosing. I like the idea of the Chocoberry but it's gonna be a very sativa strain even if you choose a very indica pheno of the blueberry. The reason is that even if it's a very indica pheno of the blueberry it's gonna still have a lot of sativa in it's makeup.
Now if it's the indica qualities of the blueberry you like and still want the berry taste think about something like a Grape Ape or Purple Kush to use as a replacement for the blueberry.
or if your looking to stay with DJ's strains Grape Krush will be a mostly indica

If you want to go as basic as it gets, seek out some landrace strains that haven't been worked and backcrossed for generations. Some seedbanks actively include landrace genetics in their strains. These strains also tend to cost less in seed form because the genetics aren't commercially viable.

The guy who spends a decade breeding is just building on the work of the human race over the past few thousand years.
Unless you take some wild hemp and breed it into some chronic, you are collaborating with the world

Thats exactly what I'm trying to avoid.
Anyone can just fem someone elses plant and go "lol look what I made!", thats not my goal.

everything does not need to be made into polotics ,that is unauthentic, everybody selects the best pheno,s when growing that seems like the natural thing to do.

Very true but remember, what is a killer pheno to one person is garbage to another and vise versa.

I believe seedsman has alot of landrace or building block type strains. I know what you mean though, I have always wanted some of each, lol Northern lights #5, skunk #1, afghani, kush from the kush mountains as examples.
Yeah just by selecting your favorite pheno and then you actually work on it then it could be called yours. A strain can vary by peoples tastes and growing conditions and a whole lot of other things. I know I weeded out Hermie's from one stain that had several phenos when I was done my favorite plant disappeared and now there are only 2 phenos. Mine is probably quite different than the friend whos seeds they were 15 yrs ago.
