Are you really American? 1

I was thinking the other day about this. I don't really consider myself to be an "American". I never really gave much thought to reciting the pledge of allegiance, which is fucking crazy in the first place. Anyway, I'm wondering if you guys and gals consider yourselves to be Americans (or British or where ever youre from)? I am from america, but don't classify me as an american.

I dunno, I think our Government is a joke. I mean, I actually laugh sometimes when they're making speaches on tv n shit. It's funny to me cuz it's horseshit. I wish our soldiers the best. I don't want any of them to get hurt, so I guess in that regard, I might be considered one. But I'm not like wearing an american flag t shirt and jumping around n shit. So I guess I'm an american if you look at my birth certificate

Ever hear the song 'Merican by the Decendents?
I think it describes my attitude toward America, and being an American to a T. I tried to pick a few lines from the song that reflected it, but I'm going to post the whole thing. Its not long, so read through it if you have an attention span that lasts over 30 seconds
Quote:
We flipped our finger to the king of England Stole our country from the Indians With god on our side and guns in our hands We took it for our own A nation dedicated to liberty Justice and equality Does it look that way to you? It doesn't look that way to me The sickest joke I know
Listen up man, I'll tell you who I am Just another stupid American You don't wanna listen You don't wanna understand So finish up your drink and go home
I come from the land of Ben Franklin Twain and Poe and Walt Whitman Otis Redding, Ellington, The country that I love But it's a land of the slaves and the ku klux klan Haymarket riot and the great depression Joe McCarthy, Vietnam The sickest joke I know
I'm proud and ashamed Every fourth of July You got to know the truth Before you say that you got pride
Now the cops got tanks 'cause the kids got guns Shrinks pushin' pills on everyone Cancer from the ocean, cancer from the sun Straight to Hell we go
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

i dont really consider myself British, but im not too sure i know what being British even entails, i like fish and chips, and sunday roast dinners so that must make me a bit British but i also think the royal family is a waste of space, the queen can suck my dick and i hate our govnerment. so that probably makes me not so british judging by everyone living around me, the British culture predominantly revolves around television and booze, its the only things urban dwellers seem to be interested in. but all major cities in Britain are over populated urban wasteland, so it doesn't have much of a culture anymore, unless football and beer count.
but there are some awesome culturally rich places in the more rural locations, such as on the Cornish coast
im rambling

I think there needs to be some distinction drawn between people labeled by their country of citizenship and personal feelings such as patriotism.
I am not a strong patriot of the United States and I do not condone patriotism. I accept that I am a natural-born American.
I guess I just don't let anyone pile on additional crap to a pretty simple term. Politicians love to say an American should be this or that... its all bullshit to play on emotions, sympathies, and irrational thoughts.

You were born, raised, and currently live here (I am assuming). You are an American there really is no arguing that fact. I understand you want to distance yourself from the world-image we have, as Americans.

I just live my life outside the whole grande ol' scheme because that scheme is way too complex ya know. Just gotta do your part whether it be saving, killing, robbing, giving errybody got their thing to do. America does have some great opportunities though and that's a fact.

You are like a self hating black person. Just because other people who are similar to you act like idiots you cannot stand being generalized along with the idiots into one lump sum.
Accept it you are an American. An American who doesn't agree with the idiots.

It's how other people perceive you. You might be a cool dude, but thing about Arabs. They probably would perceive you as some stupid American just because you live here Not necessarily just Arabs, but I think it made my point.

USA is an awesome place to visit and explore, for some of its beautiful landscape, nature and its varied cultures. but its not a country i personally would want to spend my life in, and i say the same for England.
