with pythons and boas you have to push the snake forward. all he was doing was pulling the teeth deeper with the way that constrictors teeth are. I want a snake too

Sorry man, but that is bad advice. There is a specific way to do sex probing with sterile tools. Using a finger could easily injure an animal and some species vary in the depth of males and females. Males are often actually deeper than females.
This is a general article about the process. It has good advice, but I would not suggest doing it without someone who has good practice to demonstrate then oversee your first attempts.

There are other safe ways of testing for sex in snakes too.

I recommend buying a snake from a local "captive born" reptile dealer. There are lots of reptile stores, I would avoid buying any animal from Petco or a chain store, imo.
I'd never own a snake though. Not very fond of reptiles. I used to be as a kid but now I hate the fuckers. I almost got a bearded dragon but even that was too much. Id rather have a dog or even a cat if a dog isnt an option

Petco might be the absolute worst offender when it comes to the treatment of animals by chain stores.
Snakes that have been captive bred in your home country have a much better chance of survival and are a more sustainable option for the species. Some snake importers have horrific trafficking practices as well as gather animals in ways that demolish populations.
I will try to stay off the soap box and suggest if you really are interested to do some web searches.
