Falling Seedlings
    #51422 - 06/05/08 12:02 AM (16 years, 6 months ago)

So my problem is this. I have seedlings that range from 2 inches up to 5 inches in height. My problem is that some of the seedlings routinely fall over when I water them. The mixture I used to get them started is 2 parts Scotts topsoil, 1 part vermiculite, and 1 part perlite. It drains fabulously and my plants have taken off in their little Dixie cups. But sometimes when I water the perlite shifts and down they go. I prop them back up but is something seriously wrong?

I would compact the soil a little to help support the roots

see if that helps

try to get a little airflow over them to stiffen up the stems.

make sure they're not falling due to soft squishy stems that could be a result from damping off or root rot.

Well they drain pretty much instantly so I don't think water is sitting around the roots. And when I touch the stems they seem firm and resilient. I mean even the ones that I have outside that have fallen over have started growing upwards again so they have some nifty curves. I'll try to compact the soil a little to give them a better hold. I'll be taking them from their soil homes in a little and putting them into 3x3x4 rockwool cubes with a two tote ebb and flow system when my supplies come in.

Anyone got any suggestions/tips about how to move plants from soil to rockwool? I believe I'll be getting the cubes that have the starter hole in the center. I may just put the roots into the small hole and then use the LECA to support the stems.

Seedlings will typically fall over because due to low light intensity and sometimes not enough air movement can play a rule.
It sounds like, for whatever reason, your root system is weak.
It's generally not recommended to go from soil to rockwool, it can cause ph fluctuations and clog up your pumps.
