Well my new kick is testing products that are cheaper on the budget to see how they will do. I currently have Nirvana's AK-48 growing with some of my strains and have just finished testing this product.

kellog Soils

The videos are from their web page but are a fair representation of the product.

KELLOGG PATIO PLUS® All Natural Outdoor Potting Soil

My results were as good as using FFOF and the stuff is 5 bucks a bag. Available at Lowes and Home Depot

KELLOGG PREMIUM POTTING SOIL® For Indoor & Outdoor Container Planting

Pretty much the same thing as the Patio Plus but without the Bat Guano and natural fertilizers in it. This is also 5 bucks a bag and at Home Depot and Lowes.

So Cool.
Don't carry it at my local store or may be a seasonal thing.

Will ck it out.

Thanks Magash, always helpful.

The bags I used for testing I got at Lowes.

I've been happy with my FFOF like so many others here in the forums use, but that's definately some significant $avings.

Your advice hasn't steered me off a cliff yet so I may have to get around to trying this soil in the coming months.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm sure it's a good soil but I don't think side by side comparisons are fair for soil. There's so many similarities and differences that make or break a good soil.

-Microbial activity
-Composted vs. Non composted ingredients
-Water retention
-Air porosity
-Available nutrients
-pH buffering capacity
-Humic content
-etc

Are you feeding each watering or just feeding water?

More reason to save $15-20 a bag.

I'm all for the savings but if I met a soil grower who went through the trouble of testing various brands of soil vs. building his own and was boastful of his discoveries I wouldn't be able to help myself but tell him the errors of his ways. By no means do I have anything against anything Magash posted and appreciate the fact he tested a far cheaper brand vs the indoor standard. I do recall Arjan from the GH seed company claiming he tests 10 different soils with each strain he grows which I found more than humorous.

I was using the fox farm chart for soil to feed em. I didn't want to use some home made mix cause that isn't what most people have access to.

Now what your mentioning changes from bag to bag let alone company to company so it should be more then fair. Using ten bags of each and treating like the average person would then posting which has the better results is fair enough for the needs of most people.

So before you give a answer to a question nobody asked yes I agree but for the average grower this is just fine. (Just busting your balls a little:crazy2: )

What question are you referring to that nobody asked?

FWIW, most soil heads agree that FoxFarm and most other bagged soils such as Roots Organic and virtually every other commercial soil brand esp those that provide their own nutrients have very low microbial activity due to using worm castings sourced from / fed with paper waste which leaves you with worm castings with very high carbon (good for microbial life) but very little microbial activity/humic content. This is to coax the user into using their bottled nutrients that will introduce the microbial life and fill in the missing pieces.

So basically by using expensive nutrients you're going to fill the gaps of many commercial potting soils. Which is great if that's your goal.

Another problem I commonly hear with FFOF is that it's not pHed or doesn't have a good pH buffering capacity it won't work well if your nutrients aren't either pHing the substrate or if you're not using dolomite lime. This is quite possibly the most beneficial aspect of soil growing saving time not having to pH your nutrient solution, having the ability to feed pH 5 nutrients and have them buffered to an acceptable range.

and this is exactly why I don't post unless I've used it myself. I've used Fox Farm products many many times and have never had these problems.

Magash, did u modify this soil at all prior to using? Also, based on your sweet 16 pics, may I assume you used this soil with a SOG grow? The reason I ask is because I SOG it and dont feed till a month into flower. Thanks

No I use it right out of the bag. No changes at all. When I test products I like to do it without making any changes to them that other people may not be able to do. :happyweed:

thanks for the product test Magash, I'm going to give that stuff a try. I think you saw my thread about how ridiculously expensive I think the grow supply companies make the hobby.
screw paying $20-$25 for a bag of FF.
