A cancer sufferer used and grew her own cannabis to ease pain, magistrates were told.

Angela Lane, 46, of Windsor Road, Torquay, pleaded guilty to growing ten cannabis plants at her home on November 4, and to possession of 61.1grams of cannabis on the same date.

She was fined a total of £100 and ordered to pay £100 in costs. Torbay Magistrates ordered the forfeiture and destruction of items seized by police.

Prosecutor Phillip Sewell said the cannabis, plants and growing equipment were found during a police raid on her home.

In interview with the police, Lane told them she had been diagnosed with cancer and used cannabis as pain relief.

She said she grew her own plants as she had been assaulted by a dealer and did not want to go through that again.

Mr Sewell said: "It was for her own use and the prosecution accepts that. It is not suggested it was a commercial operation."

David Charles, defending, said his client was allergic to all non-steroidal painkillers. She had recently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had arthritis in both knees.

He said: "That was why she was growing the cannabis – to alleviate the symptoms of both these conditions."

it baffles me how members of the police force can get any sort of job satisfaction, after depriving a woman in constant pain of something she needs to be able to live a comfortable life. its comparable to stealing a disabled persons wheelchair.
