In Australia cars have Boots and Bonnets, none of this Trunk and Hood nonsense, even though that would probably make more sense

In this one the Americans do make more sense especially if you think about clothing.
Hood = head = front of car Boot = booty = ass of car
p.s. when people with english/aussy accents say booty it's the funniest sounding thing ever..
"Bewwtieey" I'm loling at the thought of you saying it right now

I'm always confused with those differences. Like in the school our English teachers always got mad about students mixing up the two styles: "You can use either British or American but you have to choose one and systematically follow that one". And usually we knew both of the words, just not which one belongs to which.
And then all those measures... when I've just learned that a pint is a bit more than half a liter there comes an American and tells that actually it's a bit less, like

I mean, I can understand different slang and lingo...but I feel like such a fucking idiot for not knowing the letter Z was said "zed" in other places.
Am I the only person this is a shock to?
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?
