Using Promix - have questions
    #482162 - 09/25/10 04:29 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

When using pro mix one would obviously use hydroponic formula's since pro mix is inert however the confusion for me is what is optimal, keeping it wet or letting it dry a little in between like is done with soil. I do add more perlite and some new hydroton just for kicks so the roots can definately breathe if it stays wet (watering every day)

The more perlite you add the more frequent you water, I'd also suggest watering until you get run off if adding large amounts of perlite (40%).

The more perlite you use the less water the medium will hold, requiring more frequent waterings. If you add more perlite you won't be able to overwater the ProMix within reason and should take advantage of watering for some run off to flush the medium of salts. Smaller pots also dry out quicker so if you have say a ~2gal pot with promix with added perlite it would likely need watering daily or every other day depending on the strain, establishment of roots, temperature, etc.

IMO there's no need in letting promix dry out as you would soil, as it doesn't turn into mud when wet. Letting soil dry out is to let air get to the roots.

Feeding more often and keeping your medium wet will improve yields. Some argue that letting your roots dry out will improve yields but it's all about air getting to your roots. Feeding often brings air in with the nutrients.

My pleasure. It may be worth noting I've since switched to coco and find that it's everything promix is and more if looking for a soilless medium to be fed by hydroponic nutrient solution.
