PC Planter - Sour Diesel - DWC with 50W HPS

Box: Approx. 1 sq ft PC Planter. 18" 10" - 16" maximum plant height (see below). Setup: 50W HPS over two 3" mesh pots in a DWC Genetics: Medical Seeds' Sour Diesel (Feminized) Nutrients: Sunlight Shed's 'Moon Dust' one part soluble for veg, later suplemented with Liquid Karma PBP Bloom and Liquid Karma > PBP Soil Bloom and Liquid Karma for flowering.
Hello all. I've decided to get a micro-grow going and haven't seen any love for our sponsor Sunlight Sheds on the forums (least not that I can find) and I see they've been a sponsor for two+ years so I thought I'd be the guinea pig and give their PC Planter kit a review & test run (skip down to "9/7 - Day 0" if you're just here for the grow log). [Note: If you're looking into buying a PC case cab kit I would recommend doing some shopping around. A MrGrowPro has a nicely designed bare bones hydro system that comes with CFLs for about $315 shipped.]
Packing and delivery were excellent. They're relatively near me geographically so it only took about three days to arrive. The shipping box is printed to look like an off-brand server company's. It was labeled with item and model numbers, "MADE IN CHINA" and "QTY: 1 PCS". Even a cursory interior inspection would only reveal an unbranded large server sized tower with case locks. The front of the case is slightly different from the photo on their website but at least as nondescript - closer inspection would reveal a power strip attached to the back and a number of chords (power for the fans, pump and light) hanging out. Everything else is packed neatly inside the tower. The inventory included a page of numbered photos which were somewhat confusing at first as a few of the products no longer match their pictures. The air-stone is listed as blue but the air-stone packaged was a black curved-wand type already attached to the (black) tubing so at first I mistook it for part of the tubing. The light, air pump and fans (one intake, one exhaust) come installed in the case. I am unclear how their heat cutoff is engineered: there's a typical looking extension chord running in and out of the case and the instructions say to plug the lights into the extension chord's outlet and plug the extension chord into the timer. Unlike some of the reservoirs pictured on their website mine is a 6 qt. Sterilite storage box (clear, white lid) with reflective tape wrapped around it. Looked at one way this is a good thing: easy to go pick up a secondary reservoir for change outs. Light looks good and bright to my eye, we shall see how she does.
They've clearly constructed this kit for a hydro newbie (which I am - my previous experience is in organic soil scrogs). I have yet to look at their videos (which they recommend strongly). The printed instructions are just a little bit light on detail for a complete newbie but they cover all of the essentials. However I have to say their yield and crop time estimates are obviously insanely optimistic (65g in 45 days).
They include their one part soluble fertilizer 'Moon Dust' along with Spray-n-Grow foliar spray, Bushmaster (possibly their own version as it wasn't in the pictured packaging), an ONA block, a TDS meter, pH liquid reagent test and soluble pH up and pH down. The included timer and remote thermo/hygrometer are as pictured and feel nice and sturdy. I've already got a remote thermo/hygrometer with a smaller sensor unit that I'm using instead and only occasionally as conditions change as I'm not worried about heat in my location.
9/7 - Day 0 Received a single feminized Sour Diesel seed bred by Medical Seeds and threw it in some room temperature H20 for a soak. Seed was in what I'm told was the breeder's packaging which was a very nice little plastic vial with a layer of some soft packing foam and some silica beads inside for added protection. I'll get the seedling started and transferred to the DWC then take a clone off the top as soon as possible so I can make use of both net pots.
9/8 - Day 1 My seed looks like it's trying to split open. Transferred the seed to a starter plug (looks like a rapid rooter, it came with the PC Planter "pre-soaked with germination aides") and constructed a miniature green house with a clear drinking glass and some perforated plastic wrap: starter plug in a 3oz stainless steel condiment cup with ~1/4" of water and a bit of hydroton to hold the plug straight vertically.
9/9 - Day 2 I saw the seed leaves beginning to pop at the bottom of the depression in the starter plug earlier this morning. I left 1gal tap water sitting open over night, it's TDS reads 180ppm and pH reads slightly basic. Started out adding the recommended 1/8 teaspoon Moon Dust for germination, shaking, giving it 15 minutes to dissolve and shaking again. The TDS read 360ppm (360ppm-180baseppm = 180ppm) pH tested neutral to slightly basic. Filled the reservoir and started the system up. With the case closed it is very quiet. Certainly not much louder than a server under normal load. There is a very subtle gurgle noticeable if you bend right down next to the case but not enough to worry about. The air pump was glued into the case but came loose while I was connecting the tubing. I taped it up with some white duct tape for now but need to get some gorilla glue on it as it's vibrating against the case a bit more than I would like. There is some significant light leakage through the fans, may need to add a light trap of some kind.
9/10 - Day 3 Alright, its been running for about 18 hours now and the internal temp is running around 80F (7 degrees above room temperature - which is fine for me, it shouldn't get warmer than 75F in here until next summer). Just to see what would happen I unplugged the fans, after about fifteen to twenty minutes it overheated and the safety shut off kicked in. So it's got that going for it, which is nice. I doubt that was enough heat exposure to dry out the starter plug but I gave it a quick spray with some plain water to be safe.
Meanwhile, I received a few Apollo 11 F6 beans from a friend. Popped one of those in a starter plug in the second net pot.
9/12 - Day 5 Not a lot going on just yet. Snapped a few pics last night. After this point I'll just update in replies.

Thanks FB. Starting to have some second thoughts about taking the F6 over his Apollo 11 f5 x G13 but either one should be faster than the diesel and there's always next time. Not bothering to update the main log today as not much has happened. The Sour D is just poking her head out and straightening up.

Okay, so I knew these guys were operating in kind of a legal gray area and have been cutting them some slack in my review because I think they provide a worthwhile service. However I've realized that the light and reservoir take up quite a bit of vertical space and that there's no way to get 18" of plant height in this system which is what they list in their product description. The net pot directly under the light has about 10" of vertical space and if I push the reservoir to the right to allow the other plant to grow right up to the ceiling of the cab it can maybe squeeze into 16" vertical space.

so it sounds like their space estimate was just as over exaggerated as the time/yield prediction they give... hmmm... thanks for the product info so far, bro

So it goes, I suppose.
9/16 - Day 9 I've gradually ramped up the nutrients to about 300ppm and today I switched the timer from always on to 18/6. I'll get some pics up in a bit: the Diesel is looking healthy and has it's second set of leaves (not counting seeds leaves) just starting to grow, it's a little lanky but hopefully the increased nutrients and a bit of LST will take care of that.
The Apollo is just working it's way out of the starter plug. I think maybe I pinched the opening closed just a bit too much when first putting the plug in the hydroton.

9/21 - Day 14 Went away for the weekend, when I got back my nutrient concentration was up to 320ppm and the Diesel was just barely beginning to show some leaf curling. I added water to dilute the concentration to 280ppm. Also gave it a little foliar feeding with the Spray and Grow.

9/22 - Day 15 Mini-Update
The Sour D is looking much happier today. The Apollo is falling over under it's own weight so I staked that up and gave them another foliar feeding.

9/24 - Day 17
Looks like I crushed the stem on the Apollo 11 staking it up and it's looking pretty sad. If it doesn't perk up pretty quickly here I'm thinking about tossing it. I've started low stress training the Diesel, trimmed off the lower fan leaf on one side, anchored the bottom of the stem with a twist-tie and 'tied' the top node down with another.

Thanks but I think it's pretty well fucked. It probably doesn't help that it's gone through two to six generations of breeding selection in outdoor grows either (my friend got the F4 seeds from someone over at Yahooka so we're not sure about those generations but they've treated him pretty well outdoors). That's fine really, I don't even know if its female yet and I still have a few Apollo seeds so I can toss this one without loosing much. I may yet transfer it to another cabinet grow to try to save it, we'll see.
Right now I'm thinking I'll have a go at just LSTing the one diesel plant in here. It's not the best test run for the box but there's always next time.

Sorry to hear that, always sad when you lose a girlie.
9/26 - Day 19 I've given up on the Apollo, may it have been a boy.
Here's a shot of the Sour D in bondage. And some more root porn
I've got the temperature probe in there because we had an unseasonably hot afternoon yesterday. I ended up taking the side off the case to keep it below 80F.
Edit: sorry I forgot to turn the flash on for those. ++

9/28 - Day 21
Yesterday I went back to my original plan and topped the sour diesel, trimmed some foliage off the top, re-cut the end at 45 degrees with a razor blade, dipped it in honey and secured it in a rooting plug with a rubber band. I put the plug right in a net pot in a quart jar with a dilute nutrient solution (~150ppm) just barely reaching the bottom of the plug, gave it a good misting and put a sandwich bag over the top to keep the humidity up. You can just see some brown paper I've wrapped around the jar to shield out light.
Meanwhile everything is healing nicely on the mother.

10/1 - Day 24 I waited until the main stem had healed from topping and started doing some defoliation, today I did a little more deleafing and more training. Yesterday I aerated the nutrient water in the quart jar for an hour with a second air pump & stone and added 1ml of Liquid Karma.

10/17 - Day 40
I transferred the clone back to the reservoir yesterday. The mum is looking a little overdue for a feeding but I'll give it one and go ahead and defoliate as planned. Bumped the light schedule down so it'll turn off a little earlier tonight (15/9) in preparation to put it on 12/12 tomorrow.
Edit: You can see how the branches that would be the upper branches in absence of training have much tighter node spacing from being more aggressively defoliated from the beginning (at first I was reluctant to completely strip it as I've never tried defoliating this thoroughly before and hoped being more aggressive on those branches would let the others stretch out to fill up the empty space toward the center).
