What is the point of steampunk? I have read some literature of theirs(littles hand pamphlets that they give away at "cool" places) and it's all cool I suppose, but the dressing up is just stupid and impractical. Supposedly they are about surviving when shit hits the fan, but their fake tools are stupid.

I think it's just a fashion aesthetic
it's basically retro futuristic
what if our level of technology advanced before our level of mechanics did
Leonardo Da Vinci, Jules Vern, etc
like goth it's based around the Victorian era
all the modern comforts are available but it's all steam powered

Steampunk is a role playing style, I beleive there are even books.
People dress up to get into their roles, most of them probably play pen and paper table top games.
I'm fairly certain none of them take it to be reality. Their like those guys that paint their chests with letters for football games. I mean really WTF is up with painting shit on your chest because of a sport (this last bit isn't really serious because I get why they do it, but I'm just drawing a parallel).
I fucking love the steampunk style too actually.
