Getting ready for first grow

Hey guys. I had another thread that was pretty similar to this but wasn't as specific. I decided to start a new thread because it was getting a little full.
Anyways, i'm putting together everything I need.
I want to get around a pound to a pound and a half each harvest (I'm guessing every 2-3 months).
I'm wanting to grow soil, but am looking into hydro as well because of the last thread.
I'm not sure how much space I have yet, as i'm waiting until I move to start. I'm hoping to get a decent sized grow tent that will fit in a closet or basement or somewhere as I am keeping that in mind when looking for my new house next month.
I've heard good things about bat guano and was wanting to use that somehow. I've heard good things about ocean forest fox farm.
I'm leaning toward a 400watt hps.
So far, here is what I know I will need to get.
400watt light with cooltube - htgsupply.com
grow tent - htgsupply.com
Carbon filter - not sure where to get yet.
digital ph meter - possibly htgsupply.com
Some ducting and I know I need some type of fan. Not sure what to get or where to get it.
Ocean Forest Fox Farm - i think htgsupply has this as well.
grow bags i'm guessing 5 gallon?
ph up/down, and other chemicals possibly?
I figure i'm looking at around 700$
Anything else I need to get?
I appreciate your help in advance guys! This community is great and i'm really looking forward to my first grow. I have faith in myself and this place!

You need either a seperate "mother tent"/veg space or the ability to purchase clones to harvest a crop inside this alloted amount of time.
Good-luck with your projct. ~P~

I think I will go 600watt actually. It's like..15, 20$ more than the 400watt. Lol.
I'm still trying to figure out how to do the veg area. I want to do that as well. But don't want to buy another 200$ light and 200$ tent for it.

CFLs are good for vegging. If it's your mother plant's veg space you don't really want it growing too fast anyway.

I thought about it. But i'd rather just buy one that I know it is good quality. I won't have to mess with mylar or any of that either.
What type of nutes/chemicals should I get?
I tried CFL one time. The plants were stretched out and all. Maybe I didn't have enough lumens or something.

Could be the lumens, could be the spectrum of light they were putting out. Also with CFLs heat is (generally) less of an issue so you want them right on top of the plant.
Nutes can be as simple or as complex as you want to make them. It comes down to personal preference. Just starting out I'd lean toward keeping it simple and get an all-in-one type fertilizer like (just for example) Floranova.

I think the preferred brand of tents these days is called secret jardin or something. But I would recommend just making one from two by fours, plywood and white paint.

When I did the CFL grow, I made my own box. Didn't like it as much. I really like the style of the tents and it seems like it's alot less hassle. I'll have a little bit to spend on it and really wanna go with that method. Thanks though. I'll check into secret jardin.
Bat guano will be an additive I plan to use. As well as using ocean forest fox farm. So hopefully, I can get by with an all-in-one nute. I want the best quality though.

You should definitely go 600w if you have the space for it. It's really powerful! You should also get a digital ballast for electricity cost, and then you could turn down the light if you wanted to use it for veg with a spectrum enhanced bulb. I got the EasyCool6" from HTGSupply and I'm very happy with it. I was thinking about getting the CoolTube but I felt like it was too fragile lol, the EasyCool can also easily be cooled with a fan and has more reflective area to shoot that light back down. Electric ballasts aren't too expensive I payed $185 for a 600w Lumatek w/ the dimmer function.
And if you're interested in hydro stuff I've been thinking about getting one of these
It can fit about 8-10 plants and is only $150

Dude Hydroponics are the way to go. All I ever hear is how hard it is for beginners. I'm telling that it's not hard at all. I built my own areponics and followed the General Hydroponic web site's instructioins. To easy. In just over a month, I have 4 ft plants..

Nice
I had to get my ballast from ebay because HTGSupply didn't have a dimmable lumatek 600w for some reason
