if you're going to try pushing a hot piece of metal through glass and heat the glass up to some temperature hot to the touch I think it's highly unlikely the glass will break. If you had the vase sitting in cold water or in the fridge for some reason I think it would crack, even from room temperature I doubt it. I've never had much success trying to shape heated glass so I wish you luck.
A friend and I did it once and it took a lot of propane and time to do it, but it was a thick piece too. If you have an ox-acetylene cutting torch set up with a rosebud end you can get a metal rod red hot in no time. And yes rapid cooling will break it faster than the heat will.
