1000 watt Vs. 1000 watt
    #448938 - 07/20/10 04:06 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

i need to get a bulb and i was wondering what the difference is between a

1000W HPS replacement bulb $69.95
and
1000W HPS Hortilux Super Bulb  $129.95

my local shop has both and i didnt know if it was worth it get the second one.
i have no money so i dont no how im going to get either yet, but if the second one is better i will have to go with it.
for the expensive one it says "Provides 25% more energy in Violet, Blue and Green spectrum than standard High Pressure Sodium."
would it make that much of a difference
i only have TWO plants!

Couldn't tell you man.  I hope someone does know though.  This is the kind of question that you can really only get a legitimate answer to on the internet or directly from an experienced grower.

If your strapped for cash then go for the standard replacement bulb.  The Hortilux isn't going to give you want you want out of it for the price you pay.  The extra spectrum to my understanding is supposed to help further mimic natural sunlight and give you a better yield.  But I feel that this bump in yield is fairly negligible and you probably wouldn't notice the difference.

That being said I usually buy Hortilux bulbs.

Does anyone have links to comparisons of the different bulbs on the market? Even if it's anecdotal evidence from other forums (or this one) that would still rock.

I too need to get some new bulbs soon and this has been bugging me.

The hortilux eye is supposed to be hard to beat for lumen output. Some people with light meters have concluded other bulbs have the same or far more lumens than advertised/benchmarked.

The wider spectrum of light has many claims such as higher yield, more variety of terpenoids produced, more aggressive growth, the list goes on.. Hortilux bulbs are definitely the most commonly recommended of the elite bulbs Ushio being a close second.

The lumen talk has been discussed a ton from what I've found on various boards. Lumen output does go to say how effective your bulb is at producing light however plants don't use lumens and they use PAR radiation so the bulb that gives the most PAR radiation should be the best for growing. I've been told the SolarMax beats the Hortilux in this department and hope to find out testing a brand new solarmax vs a hortilux in a fair experiment.

Rock the Ultra Sun, dude, you won't regret it. They are super bright and reliable, not to mention cheap as hell.. What kind of ballast are you using?

whomp whomp
my boy who told me it was a 1000 watt ballast was wrong.
(he told me it was an aircooled 1000 watt ballast with 6 inch carbon scrubber and fan all i needed was a new bulb).
i get there and
its a 400 watt ballast/hood, w/o even the glass to enclose it.
in my head im all , but i was very polite/appreciative anyway.
Beggars cant be choosers, and either way it was nice for him to let me borrow it. on a side note. i dont need to buy a bulb
there was a "400 watt Super HPS still in the box there.
but
gay. thats more then half what i wanted
im gonna try and get something else because i feel like i just lost half my harvest.
you gotta understand. i thought these plants could just live outside
then it was changed to there gonna finish under 1000 watts, now they are gonna go under 400
they are gonna be some sad mothers

would adding CFL's even help the slightest?

You'd be surprised what you can do with a 400w light, definitely throw some CFLs in there for extra lighting and you may end up a lot less dissapointed than you think.

I think you could get away with flowering those under a 400 but you might want more.
