Best way to setup CFL's

How do you guys set up your CFl's? I am going to get about 4 or 5 of the 100watt comparison bulbs. I have read about putting holes in the plastic part and stringing wires together. This is all fine, but what about for the first bulb? What all would I need?

Well, one thing is you could get an extension cord, cut off the end, and do some wiring to some individual light sockets, pretty basic electrical wiring setup... I did find this from another website that would be even easier though:
Quote:
-1 Surge Protector
-4(ish... Depending on how big the surge protector is) Light socket adapter plugs
-4 (or as much adapters you bought) Twin Adapter

Would that setup be safe? What kind of light shield should i put around it to maximize the light output for the plants? I think the cfl's are either 1600 or 2700 lumens each. I don't remember. I was gonna do 4 or 5 of them.

I would assume it would be safe as long as it was installed properly. Another option would be to have a few extension cords instead of one power strip so you could place each bulb individually. This is what I would personally do because you would want your bulbs in different areas to ensure everything gets enough light. You'd want one of those bulbs per square foot (add more if you have any shadows as plants grow out, 2000 lumens per square foot is what I understand to be the rule of thumb), and try to hang them horizontally instead of pointing down to use the light more efficiently.
Not sure on the reflectors though. I'm sure any appropriate sized reflector that you can install around it safely and will do the job would work.

I just made an improvised 3 CFL setup for a small clone greenhouse. Not tested it yet. Here is the post with pics.

Alright, So here is what I think i'm gonna do. I want to make a hanging light setup. I'll a couple pieces of wood, make a square, and put a surge protector on each of the two sides. Maybe I can line the top of the box with sheet metal or something that will maximize the light. This way I can raise and lower the CFL's. This sound like a good idea? The inside of my box is going to be painted white.
