underwater growing
    #441737 - 07/04/10 01:28 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

i can't find any definitive answers, so i'm trying it.

put a nicely rooted blue dream clone into a 20 gallon aquarium.  the aquatic plant that lives in there has thrived on the fish waste, so lets see if little cannabis can survive underwater.

oh and i used a blue dream clone, just because you know the name is fitting and all.

I'll be honest with ya. I don't think she'll make it.

I mean CO2? Lighting? Oxygen? Nutrients?

Just because a Pine tree can survive in the arctic doesn't mean a cannabis plant can too. Same logic with water.

I hope I'm wrong though. Underwater dank would be sick.

P.S nice Tiger Barbs, make sure your fish don't get at the plant man. But it looks like you have a fresh water tropical tank like me so it should be sweet.

I wonder if there's potential for it surviving if you bubbled a good amount of air across the plant and provided adequate lighting.  My guess is that water surface tension would mostly prevent the plant from absorbing any CO2, but

I'm going to assume the roots won't receive enough oxygen and I'm also going to assume the plant won't have any way to transpire water/exchange gases as the stomata are meant to be be dry in terrestrial plants.

i agree, but its still alive and perky.  the water is fairly oxygenated, i'd say just as good as any DWC or recirculating DWC - it is constantly agitated and aerated by a waterfall

It is going to die.  As has been stated before if marijuana was meant to grow underwater that is what it would be naturally doing.

But kudos for trying it at least.

I know, I know. I just hate when I hear people spouting off at the mouth full of bullshit facts, so when I make a post, I always like to include a disclaimer that most of my knowledge is either limited, or through reading other peoples experiences

You know, just on the off chance someone decides to take my advice word for word

And hey...if you've got it, why not try new things I guess. I know people who throw away clones from their mothers to keep them trimmed down. Hell, if they could stick them in their fish tank and grow em, fuck yeah!

you wouldn't understand and thats ok because you're new.  when you have several hundred clones which are going in the trash because you've already got your rooms filled, sticking a clone in the aquarium out of curiosity is really no big deal.

for someone who built their first DWC a month ago, you seem to have very strong opinions about what i'm doing with my spare clones.  now go tend to your phototron and keep your negative opinions to yourself.

Lol i just threw out about 200 perfectly good clones.  Who gives a fuck about wasting one?  It takes all of about two weeks before you have more to choose from.  I've probably thrown away more good cuttings then I've flowered, it just doesn't matter if you have a mother plant.

To keep it down sized bro. If you only cut the clones you were planning on using, you'd have a TREE for a mother. And nobody has room for that!

^^ Exactly, in fact the size I'm keeping my moms at right now is way too large for the amount of clones I need.  So I'll probably clone the moms and trash them and start again with the fresh cuttings.

Every two weeks I do a small trim to keep the plant from growing into the lights, and every other month I usually take a hedge trimmer to them and hack them down heavily.  It's just basic maintenance that needs to be done otherwise you'll have a jungle in your veg cab before you know it.

Phototrons are pretty badass in my opinion. I grew with one for fun. I would never hate on anyone for using one. 400w lights are nothing to brag about though.

This useless flaming and trolling isn't needed here.

YNP is using much more than a 400, and has many grows under his belt, just so you know.

Following a member around with useless comments just to harass them and name calling is in fact flaming and trolling.

Not to mention how silly you make yourself look when talking shit about someone you know nothing about to start with.

snails been eating the leaves, ill try and snap a photo when i have a chance.  wasnt the water that killed it, so we'll never know the results

on a related note, if anyone knows how to get rid of those little snails that infest tropical aquariums, please tell me

You need to get some clown loaches man

I used to have a horrible snail problem, then I got 3 Loaches and  haven't seen one since:shrug:

Alternatively if you don't want any more fish then you can just squish them up against the glass and your fish will eat the remains. Or I'm sure your local aquarium has some stuff that would help

Him being a grower it would be easiest to find whatever nutrient contains the most copper and dose the tank a little. Doesn't take much copper at all to kill snails.

That's probably true but I would never pour chemicals into my tank on the idea it will only kill one species, tanks are expensive to obtain and build up and to even keep running. And that's a bit of a risk in my book

well i've got 7 tiger barbs, an emerald green cory, and a chocolate albino pleco.  so i dont think loaches would be a wise addition to the community.  plus its only a 20gal tank so i'm pretty much at capacity.

Plus Loaches feed on snails in the wild so they love that shit.

Yea you might be able to get away with one loach in there for a little bit but not much else, plus Clown Loaches get rather large so probably not the best idea

I have 3 peppered Cory's, 3 Bristle nose Pleco's, 3 Clown Loaches, a large Featherfin catfish, 4 large blue Gourami's  and 4 Thomas eye chichlids in my 200L tank and its pretty near capacity.

Damn internet bitch fight! Let's hear some more of the psychological / verbal abuse so accustomed to female television shows. Damn it's fun seeing the feminine side of things sometimes. Got to watch out for that marijuana, damn sure makes me feel like a pussy 90% of the time.
