Coffee for french press.
    #438693 - 06/27/10 11:08 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

So I use a french press as of late for making my coffee, I used to use a coffee maker but my partner took it when we went our separate ways. I use cheap folger's coffee at home that comes in the big 2.2kilo container preground for use in coffee makers. I've been using this stuff and getting a film in the bottom of my coffee mug because it's too finely ground. I want to go to either Starbucks or Second Cup (unless someone can recommend some other place) and buy some good beans and have it ground properly.

What's everyones favorites? I like Dark roasts from Second Cup and Medium roasts from Starbucks. My favorite from Starbucks is the Pike's Place or Estima. For Second Cup I like the Sumatra which is from Asia. Does anyone know any non second cup or starbucks locations that sell Sumatra at a good price?

Italian Roast is my favorite Starbucks coffee...I think it kicks the Pike's Place ass.

Almost all coffee roasters have a Sumatran coffee because it is one of the pacific region coffees that is easily accessible for a large market.

I highly recommend googling a local coffee roaster and asking them...many will even do a custom roast for you based on your tastes!

You will always have a fine residue using a french press.
That is one of the reasons, it makes a better cuppa

A decent grinder is only $15-35
If your a coffee lover, do yourself a favor and buy one

I buy Starbucks Espresso or French Roast beans and grind them up fine.
I don't have a french press (yet) but I do improvise.
I haven't used a drip coffee maker in a long time

There's far less black residue when you get your grinds coarser which is the idea for French Pressing.

I love the black residue at the bottom of the press. So good.  And fuck Starbucks coffee that shit is overly priced and a joke.

To be honest, I haven't really tried the black residue but it seemed unappealing to me. Reminds me of sand or something.

You really shouldn't be drinking coffee from a french press
if you're afraid of a lil residue in the bottom of your cup man.

That residue just lets you know that your getting all the flavor from the bean.

And IMO a finer grind gives a better flavor.

Let the coffee sit longer after brewing so the residue ends up in the pot and not your cup

Or go back to a drip maker

Have you seen the difference in residue from both a fine grind and a french press grind? Using folger's coffee (which is the fine grind) I can basically scoop it out with a spoon, at a coffeeshop it's no where close to as much residue.

Have you seen the consistency of the grind they use for French Presses in a coffee shop?

It's definitely very coarse compared to coffee intended for a drip coffee maker.

That was a riveting story, ol' chap, but I believe he was inferring a rather humorous remark.  Cheerio!
