does anyone know anything about philosophy? specifically emmanuel kant?
    #43116 - 05/29/08 06:35 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

I'm studying emmanuel kant, and I can't figure out what he means by treating a person as a thing rather than as an end in itself.

"The categorical imperative, however, may be based only on something that is an "end in itself". That is, an end that is a means only to itself and not to some other need, desire, or purpose." Wheras a "thing" usually is just being used, as part of a means to an end.

Considering Kant was most associated with Enlightenment Era thought, I'd say that quote is legitimizing people as individuals instead of as cogs in the machine.

yeah, that makes sense, the problem with kant is that he speaks of all these things in a way so that it's like he's observing human morals like light activity in different sets of lightbulbs. You know? I just can't understand what the hell he's talking about sometimes.

on top of that, he says he's treating a person as a thing rather than as a means itself, which seems to be the opposite of what he usually talks about, maybe he's using an example of what people SHOULDN'T do. Plus I don't want to infer from a question I should know the exact answer to.

thanks

thanks bro, I'm sorry moral philosophy is so easy for you to understand. maybe you have emmanuel kant and moral ethicisism memorized. Not that any of that stuff is too hard to understand, just the way they talk about everything, hedonism, and the subject of the moral and the objectisism and all that. It'd be easier if most of these people used 21st century english instead of 11th century or 15th century or 6th century english or what not.

The jyst of what I get from Kant, specifically ethical philosophy, is that he was, like, the anti-utilitarian. He believed that intentions were the important aspect of ethics (not the result of an action, as utilitarians believe).

I'm not very familiar with his writings, but maybe you can apply this generalization to yr writing of kant and his opinion of treating people as a thing rather than an end to itself.

however, that statement confuses me because it seems a little... obvious. Whatevz.

most of it seems extremely obvious. And they complicate it so much, which is strange, since it could be simplified, which most writing is supposed to be, for anyone who's been drilled by a language teacher.
