DES MOINES, Iowa -- Until February you probably hadn’t spent much time thinking about medical marijuana in Iowa. Maybe you don’t think about it much now, but a unanimous decision by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy is forcing all of us to think about it, all of us to form an opinion. They recommended that the legislature reclassify marijuana as a schedule two drug, which would then open the doors for Iowa doctors to prescribe it to patients.
If it becomes legal, how will Iowa handle it? Will we be able to buy pot on Court Avenue? What about in our town square? Will it stick to its intended use, strictly for cancer patients and chronic pain sufferers? Or will it open the floodgates to imposter patients, people wanting it just to get high?

California was the first state to legalize medical marijuana back in 1996. So photojournalist Jesse Landolt and I traveled there. We wanted to see how the ‘Cannibus Capitol’ has handled it.
Here’s a preview of what we found. A 74-year-old MS patient who says medical marijuana saved her life. Compare that to a 20-year-old skateboarder who’s been legally smoking pot since the age of 16. A doctor recommended it after the teenager twisted his ankle.(read more)
