Vegetative Grow Light

So here's the deal: I am a long time mushroom grower and first time cannabis grower.
I have two plants on growing currently and they are on their 3rd set of true leaves. For now I have just been using daylight coming in from my window to help them along.
It's obviously time to get away from that and get them under a grow light.
From what I understand the best thing right now would be for a metal halide lamp to help with vegetation and keeping the plant short. With only two plants I don't for-see myself needing anything over 100 - 200 watts. Is this correct? What Kelvin range do I need?

Hi, first of all you have to plan your grow. The space you'll use, the budget avaiable, and number of plants you want to have.
Now lets talk about lights, for veging you want to use 6500K range. for flowering 2700K.
If you plan to run your grow with low budget you could get some cfl's, if you don't a metal halide for veging and a High Pressure Sodium for flowering would be the best choice.
Remember that a 250W HID light it's much more efficient than 250W of cfl's.
Now about wattage, You could run those 2 plants with 150W, but obviously, you would have much greater results with 400W.This part is just about how much you want to spend with lights.
Welcome!!!!

I have a 6500K light I have used for mushrooms.. but I didn't think that would work with the cannabis. How high would it need to be from the top of the plants?

What's the wattage of the light? it shouldn't be less than 5 cm from tops (general) Use your hand and keep it on top of your plants, if it's too hot move the light up Try to keep the top of the plants at 25-29ยบ C.

if your only growing 2 plants just get like a 250w HPS or even a 150W if you keep them short by cutting 12/12 just after 3 weeks. but beware they do create heat so you will need fans and when they start to flower they do stink very bad so a carbon filter is best you can make one or buy one. but if you get an hps you can use it for both veg and flowering. but like is said 2 plants can grow big if you let them or they can stay short it depends on what you intend to do... hell you could grow 6 autoflowering plants under 150W hps and yeild 1/2 ounce to 1 ounce a plant.
and 6500K is used for veg and 2700K is used for flowering... if you use an hps though its both....

Agreed, they're actually just starting their first set of true leafs by my definition. The very bottom set seen there are called Cotelydons and they are not true leafs by any definition. The next set are considered true leaves by some because of the jagged edges and standard Eudicot branching vascular structure, but since they are only a single finger at that point I don't count them as true leaves. The third set there will likely be three fingered and that's where I start counting.

The picture is slightly dated. It has three fingered leaves at the moment.
So the 24W 6500K grow light I have won't work for vegging these two plants?

i got into mushrooms because of growing weed now im going back to growing some weed hahaha
lets talk lumans my friend you want about 4500 per plant thats why you need something powerful like a set of t5 florescent tubes or that wonderful MH lamp you have check the lumans
and also look up some temperature information ; for the strain of your plant and look into using your spent mushroom cakes for compost for your weed plants
i love to grow everything good luck my friend

no i used 2 3 foot 23 watt t5 lights never really did much look into some CFl's if you cant roll with the MH
but Metal halides or high pressure sodium lamps are great even better if you can get a conversion bulb that way you only need one system
im trying to get a 75 watt - 125 watt HPS lamp/ MH but no luck

weed is a weed man just as basic as it gets it will grow under any if not all conditions
what people do it optimize the growth and production of there plants with systems like areo/hydroponics for nutrients or giving them a very high amount of light witch they would receive in a big open field
so MH and HPS lights give denser buds . bigger and better plants
it all depends what you want out of your plant

I got ya.
Well I found this: http://www.rvfgardensupply.com/cgi/display.cgi?item_num=901592
Could put it in the ballast I have now and it would provide enough lumens.
