weird spots on leaves?
    #413631 - 05/07/10 08:57 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Soil Growers:
1. Are you growing from seed or clones?
Seed

2. How old are your plants?
~month (30 days)

3. How tall are your plants?
3-4"

4. What size containers are they planted in?
Solo Cups

5. What is your soil mix?
60/40 FFOF/Perlite

6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use?
Every other day; RO water

7. What is the pH of your water?
6.3-6.5

8. What kind of fertilizer do you use and what is its NPK ratio?
These plants have not been fed yet.

9. Do you foliar feed or spray your plants with anything?
No

10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined? (HPS, MH, fluorescent, halogen, incandescent "plant lights")
400w MH for the time being as of a week ago. 250w T5 cfl prior.

11. How close are your lights to the plants?
~2ft

12. What size is your grow space in square feet?
120sqf

13. What is the temperature and humidity in your grow space?
75-80F; 65-70%RH maybe? not sure on humidity

14. What is the pH of the soil?
No idea and no way to test. They are in FOFF and have not been fed, flushed a couple of days ago after noticing weird spots on leaves.

15. Have you noticed any insect activity in your grow space?
Not that I have noticed, I don't think so.

16. How much experience do you have growing?
Fourth grow, first real attempt at indoor.

I can take better pics if need be. all separate plants:

ok, so about a week ago i noticed these weird spots on some of the leaves of my babies. this only appears to be happening on the very bottom leaves, and i mean literally the bottom leaves, like the very bottom set and only on the four plants pictured above. i really have no idea what this is. my first thought was some sort of insect or something, but i have examined all of the leaves of all of the plants (underside and topside) with a jeweler's loupe and found no sign of insects or larvae or anything. i also performed an extremely thorough inspection of the grow space and found nothing. i have not noticed it getting worse or better, it is only affecting those four plants right now but it looks like something either chewed on it or there is some sort of cellular degeneration (necrosis maybe?), or perhaps this is completely normal and i'm just being an over-protective mother.

thanks for any help in advance, guys!!!

Looks like the babies are starting to suck the nitrogen out of the leaves and need a little bit of food. Just my opinion, wait for someone else to jump in too.

i was thinking this could be a possibility as they have not been fed yet and i know it should be soon.

Esp if they're still in solo cups.  But that doesn't look anything like nitrogen deficiency to me.  Check the pH of your run off and let us know what that is.  Ocean forest can run a bit acidic.

i'll have to check tomorrow when i water, but it sounds like they just need foods, which is what i was thinking was the case.

thanks a bunch guys, i'll get back to you with pH sometime tomorrow afternoon.

DieselB: soil looks normal as far as i can tell, but i'm not sure what sort of abnormalities i'd be looking for really.

yeah, i was a bit confused.

anyway, i'll test the runoff tomorrow to see if they need food, they probably do. if that's the case then i guess it's time to start a feeding regimen finally.

You might wanna think about transplanting them at this point as well.

i was just going to ask that. i've been thinking about it, and i do feel it's just about time, but something in the back of my head is telling me not quite yet. i will probably transplant in the next week, i have all the supplies to do so already so it's just about actually doing it. i guess if they need food now, i should just transplant and get it over with.

If it were me I would transplant at this point.  If they've been in those cups for a month they're more than ready to transplant.  What kind of nutrient line are you going to be using?

Also, since OF tends to be a bit acidic I would get your pH up more towards 6.8-7.

Oh, I use it too.  The only soil I'll use unless I'm building my own.  But since it's peat based it turns acidic, but not usually too horribly.

I've only observed the leaves fade progressively not with spottings for N deficiencies. A good example of this is when flushing, N is first to become deficient which is shown but fading of entire leaves progressively. This is to say the whole leaf changes color at once.

I haven't observed anything yet. But I have been reading a shit ton and absorbing it all! Thanks for that! Also, could it be some type of light burn from using improper or sub par reflective material? I dont know what they are using but it kinda looks like that too doesnt it?

Only thing is tho, it is only on the bottom leaves. Which made me think it would be the plant trying to use up nitrogen. Also how old they are and not being fed and in such small containers.

Light burn is generally larger areas of leaves and there's almost always some dried and curled leaves when light burn is apparent. Small marks like that could happen if you were to foliar feed without an atomizer and/or wetting agent.

As for the possibility of N def, the stems and veins of leaves would become red along with entire leaves yellowing at once.
