A man arrested on suspicion of drug charges and child endangerment said he is concerned with the actions of police who shot two dogs they described as “aggressive” while serving a drug-related search warrant at his home earlier this month in southwest Columbia.
J. Whitworth Police arrested Jonathan E. Whitworth, 25, of 1501 Kinloch Court on Feb. 11 on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and second-degree child endangerment. A police SWAT team entered Whitworth’s residence around 8:30 p.m. suspecting a large amount of marijuana at the location, police spokeswoman Officer Jessie Haden said. SWAT members encountered a pit bull upon entry, held back and then fatally shot the dog, which officers said was acting in an uncontrollably aggressive manner.
Whitworth was arrested, and his wife and 7-year-old son were present during the SWAT raid, Haden said. A second dog, which Whitworth’s attorney Jeff Hilbrenner described as a corgi, also was shot but was not killed.
“The family is concerned with what happened,” Hilbrenner said. “We don’t feel like what happened in the home was appropriate. The priority right now for us is the misdemeanor charges.”
Police discovered a grinder, a pipe and a small amount of marijuana, Haden said. Because the SWAT team acts on the most updated information available, the team wanted to enter the house before marijuana believed to be at the location could be distributed, she said.
“If you let too much time go by, then the drugs are not there,” she said.
Drug distributors traditionally have a history with firearms, which is why the SWAT team is used when executing such warrants, Haden said. If the SWAT team believed they could have executed the warrant successfully during the daytime when the wife and child were not present, they would have, she said.

WTF!! The only place it's going to be distributed is into his body for a relaxing night probably. What about when an alcoholic Dad beats his kid after a bottle of Vodka, bet the cops don't call out the SWAT and shoot his dogs.
Fucking dickheads.

I know man. I'm horribly disgusted as well, because I grow in my living space for personal, and own 2 Jack Russel Terriers, and could easily see that happening.
My dogs are the most peaceful animals but obviously if someone invades their territory (aka fucking faggot cops/sherriff/dea) they are going to bark and act "aggressively".
I'm just high as fuck and woke up recently so my posts aren't very informative as of yet.

I hope that guy can sue the police for excessive force! Shooting a dog such as a pitbull for looking "Vicious or Hostile" is just wrong. They all look intimidating, it is their nature. But i heard 1 shot which obviously wounded the dog when they entered (heard yelping) the door and then 3 more later on to finish the dog(no more yelping)! That's just fucked up!!!
And all for cannabis! And such a small amount even for that much force!
Wrong I tell you!!!!!!!!!!

This is not the same story, but one similar. He had 2 labs the pigs shot and sounds so much like this case posted by OP.
taken from here: http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/08/07/mayor.warrant/
CNN) -- A Maryland mayor is asking the federal government to investigate why SWAT team members burst into his home without knocking and shot his two dogs to death in an investigation into a drug smuggling scheme. Berwyn Heights, Maryland, Mayor Cheye Calvo comforts wife Trinity Tomsic at a news conference Thursday.
Berwyn Heights, Maryland, Mayor Cheye Calvo comforts wife Trinity Tomsic at a news conference Thursday.
"This has been a difficult week and a half for us," Cheye Calvo, mayor of Berwyn Heights, Maryland, said Thursday. "We lost our family dogs. We did it at the hands of sheriff's deputies who burst through our front door, rifles blazing."
The raid last week was led by the Prince George's County Police Department, with the sheriff's special operations team assisting, after a package of marijuana was sent to Calvo's home.
Authorities say the package was part of a scheme in which drugs are mailed to unknowing recipients and then intercepted.
Calvo said he had just returned home from walking his two Labrador retrievers, Chase and Payton, when his mother-in-law told him a package had arrived for his wife, Trinity Tomsic.
Moments later, Calvo was in his room changing for a meeting when he heard commotion downstairs.
"The door flew open," he said. "I heard gunfire shoot off. There was a brief pause and more gunfire."
Calvo said he was brought downstairs at gunpoint in his boxer shorts, handcuffed and forced onto the floor with his mother-in-law near the carcass of one of dead dogs. Video Watch Calvo describe the raid »
"I noticed my two dead dogs lying in pools of their own blood," Calvo said.
Calvo said his mother-in-law is still recovering from the incident.
"She got the worst of it," Calvo said. "She was literally in the kitchen, cooking a lovely pasta dish, and they brought down the door and shot our dogs."
While he was being held, Calvo said, he told police he is the town's mayor, but they didn't believe him.
Berwyn Heights has its own police force, he said, but Prince George's County police did not notify the municipal authorities of their interest in his home or the package.
"They didn't know my name. All they knew was my wife's name. They matched that to the registration of the car," Calvo said. "It was that lack of communication that really led to what has really been the most traumatic experience of our lives."
After the raid, arrests were made in the package interception scheme.
The incident has prompted the couple to call for a federal investigation because, they say, they don't believe police are capable of conducting an internal investigation.
"They've said they've done nothing wrong," Calvo said. "I didn't sign up for this fight, but I think what we have to do now is make changes to how Prince George's County police and Prince George's County sheriff's department operate."
Calvo said authorities entered his home without knocking and refused to show him a warrant when he requested one.
But Prince George's County Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Taylor said legal counsel had informed her that "no-knock" warrants do not exist in Maryland. Video Watch authorities defend their actions »
Taylor said authorities were acting on a warrant issued based on information available to them at the time.
"This warrant was for permission to search the premises," she said. "The special operations team that supported us made a decision about the necessity of entry at the point of being on the scene."
"No-knock" warrants have drawn criticism before. In Atlanta, Georgia, Kathryn Johnston, 92, was shot to death by police in a botched drug raid involving such a warrant in November.
Taylor, a self-described dog lover, expressed sympathy for the loss of Calvo's dogs, but stopped short of apologizing for the incident.
"We've done these similar kinds of operations over and over again, to the tune of removing billions of dollars of drugs from the community and without people or animals being harmed," she said. "We don't want any of our operations to result in the injury or loss of anybody, and certainly not animals."
The deputies have said they killed the two animals because they felt threatened.
"I would say that the dogs presented a threat, I would imagine, to the special operations situation," Taylor said.
Meanwhile, Calvo and his wife said members of the community have expressed sympathy and concern about the incident. advertisement
At a news conference Thursday, Tomsic tearfully recalled a recent encounter with a neighbor who used to wave at the couple as they walked Payton and Chase.
"She gave me a big hug," Tomsic said. "She said, 'If the police shot your dogs dead and did this to you, how can I trust them?' "
This is the stuff We the people need to stop letting this government do to us. We do NOT have privacy or freedom anymore! And if we do not stand up soon, they will take the rest of the freedoms we do have away!!
How can they say drugs are the thing hurting us? When in 2 days i have read 2 articles about cops killing people animals? Seems to me, our government is hurting us more then anything. We have the highest incarceration rate in the WORLD! Higher then even the so called communist countries. WTF is wrong with this place???!!!

I bet he won't be able to sue because of the negative stigma attached to pit bulls (my favorite breed). If it turns out they shot the corgi first then maybe his case will look better because they're not known for unnecessary aggression. Hard to say though because that tape makes the police look way too aggressive. I can't believe they couldn't find a way to raid the house during the day while the kid and wife weren't home. Fuckers. Only found paraphernalia and a small amount of bud. I wonder if they'll still stick him with the second degree endangerment to the child.

i saw this over in the shroomery too, but i basically said that it was crazy that he police would use such force and manpower over just a little amount of pot, and then to shoot thier dogs, members of the family!? thats just unacceptable by any police.
just because the dog was barking doesnt mean its attacking, or going to attack, and pit bulls are are supposed to look aggressive, thats thier job, but dont shoot them for it. and the corgi? why shoot the corgi? what was it doing? hiding in the corner barking? all it could do is gnaw at your ankles and thats about it.
this and spacemonkey's article just make me mad. if someone, especially the police, shot my dog i would do all i could to get justice. sue, complain, anything.

Yeah, I mean, I think this is ridiculous myself. What really gets me is the Corgi though. I think the pit bull shooting is bullshit too but I guess you could KIND OF MAYBE justify that in the court of law with the "aggression" clause. I believe that it is indeed bullshit though. But the Corgi?? You cannot honestly tell me that you were afraid for your life at any point when you encountered that dog. Especially when you're in possession of a semi automatic firearm.
Note- I have a pit bull that's a little over a year, and while she might flip out if people busted down the door, I have a strong feeling all she would do is probably lick them to death with this big dumbass smile on her face . And if they shot her, I would be one mad motherfucker and would fucking punch the shit out of whoever did, gun or not, assault on an officer or not. That's bullshit.

This is despicable, inhumane behavior. This should under no circumstances be tolerated and something needs to be done about this. I'd like to take a stand against this in anyway I can, I think I might start by forwarding this to some local news stations, assuming they haven't already aired a piece on this.
These officers should be charged for this. Plain and simple. This country is going so far off in the opposite direction of what it was built on that I'm sure our forefathers are turning in their fucking graves right about now. This is seriously one of the most disturbing atrocities I've heard about in awhile, I REALLY hope this does not go forgotten and the people responsible get what they deserve.

Anyone see any reason why it's a bad idea to start mass calling their police department and complain/demand an explanation. Perhaps we could get people involved and inundate these redneck fucks with so much phone traffic they can't get any real work done.

Lol someone should call that local PD in a panic'd voice and say "oh my god I just saw my neighbor with a gram of marijuana and a pipe can you please come arrest him and kill his dogs?" or something like that. That would so be the lulz.

Columbia, Missouri Police Chief: "I Hate the Internet" May 12, 2010 - Reason.com Radley Balko
Columbia, Missouri Police Chief Ken Burton is apparently frustrated. At another press conference yesterday, a reporter asked the chief what he has learned from the international attention generated by the YouTube video of his department's SWAT team conducting a drug raid last February.
His reply: "I hate the Internet."
I'll bet he does. For two-and-a-half months, Burton and his department were quiet about the raid. That's likely because, as I wrote yesterday, the raid was really no different from the tens of thousands of similar raids conducted every year, and that are probably conducted by his own department a couple of times per week. Within days of the video hitting the web, Burton was forced to hold several press conferences, and has now laid out several reforms to the way SWAT raids will be conducted in Columbia in the future. I suppose it's possible those reforms were brewing all along, and the timing of him announcing them after the video went viral was mere coincidence. It seems at least plausible, though, that the dread "Internet" sparked some actual policy changes, here.
Unfortunately the changes—while small steps in the right direction—still miss the point. Burton says his department will no longer conduct SWAT raids at night. They won't conduct raids in homes where children are present. Suspects will be under constant surveillance until the raid is carried out. And raids will be conducted within a shorter period of time from when police get the initial tip about a suspected drug dealer. But the Columbia Police Department will still conduct volatile, violent, highly aggressive forced-entry raids on people suspected of consensual, nonviolent drug crimes. That is what's wrong with the YouTube video. Changing the time of day of the raid doesn't change the wildly disproportionate use of force.
Burton and his department have also criticized web commentary on the video, citing both death threats aimed at members of the SWAT team and an abundance of what Burton calls "misinformation" about the raid.
He's right. I saw both. In particular, the description that accompanied the YouTube video (which today topped 1 million views) described the pit bull the police killed as crated when it was shot. It wasn't. (I should disclose that I passed on this bit of incorrect information to several people while discussing the raid before discovering it was incorrect, though I didn't put it in print). And death threats, even from keyboard commandos posting on Internet discussion boards, are inexcusable.
That said, Burton is deflecting. When the video first went viral, his department's spokesperson acknowledged that the police didn't know a seven-year-old boy was in the home, but explained that the department has to carry out drug raids quickly before dealers can move their supply. That was, as Burton would put it, "misinformation." You might even call it a lie. At the very least, it was another example of a police spokesperson reflexively defending the department before knowing all the facts. Eight days passed between the time the police were tipped off to the alleged marijuana stash and the time they conducted the raid.
As I reported yesterday, according to Brittany Montgomery, the mother and wife in the home at the time of the raid, the police initially gave the family a copy of the video in which the audio and portions of incriminating video had been removed. That sounds like "misinformation," too. Montgomery also wrote that when her neighbors inquired with the department about the raid, they were initially told it was a drill, and that no shots were fired. That too was "misinformation." (The department didn't return my call, so I haven't been able to get their response to these two allegations.)
"Misinformation" coming from police department officials acting in their official capacity is a hell of a lot more troubling than misinformation disseminated on Internet discussion boards and in blog comment threads.
As for the death threats, yes, they're an unfortunately ugly part of often-anonymous Internet discourse. But Burton's men were just captured on video firing off seven rounds into a home just seconds after they'd broken into it. This, despite the fact that there was nothing in the home that posed a lethal threat to them. (Yes, some pit bulls can be dangerous, but not to an armed SWAT team bedecked in full body armor.) One of those rounds missed its intended target (the pit bull) and struck an unintended target (the Corgi). According to Montgomery, there are now bullet holes in the walls of the house. There were other people in that house who weren't suspects, people the cops weren't aware of before they started firing their guns, including a child. That seems like a pretty reckless disregard for human life.
But Burton would have us believe that the real outrage here is the faux "if they try to come to my house and do that, I'll kill them" Internet bravado that came in response to the video, not the very real violence actually depicted in it.

So this goes on very often, this is just one of the few that caught on tape? But importantly, they are breaking forcefully into a persons home because that person may want to ingest something into his/her body? 4 Real??? Kill 2 dogs, because obviously some snitch said he had a bunch. Blah, the drug war is so lame and inexcusable!!!

Sounds like a contradictive statement to me? no?

I find nothing wrong with the line "if they try to do that to me, I'll kill them."
If I heard my door break down and shots fired I would defend my self, if they enter MY domain I feel they have no right to do anything. I feel anything, or at least any non violent crime, should be legal if you do it within the bounds of your house.
My house is my parents and my own. My dad dug the basement out from under this house when he was a kid, and before he moved back in here my uncle and cousins lived here. In my opinion the government hasn't got the right to come in here and do anything, they haven't built it or maintained it.
When police action becomes more and more like the example we have seen here it shows more and more that the title "The government" is really just given to the people with the largest gang.
So I will happily say that, if the cops come into my house guns blazing, I am going to take at least one of them out. And I would do so proudly as they would endanger me, and my family.
And oh? They didn't know a child was there?
So they are telling us that the police department can't just like look up an address in some database and see the names of the residents? (and if they don't why don't they? That would make raids so much more effective.) I don't support raids themselves, but if they are going to be done they need to be done as safe as possible. I feel that the police should have to be attacked to even have guns drawn. WHEN THEY SIGNED UP, I'M FAIRLY CERTAIN THEY KNEW THEY MIGHT GET SHOT AT. Meaning they should be prepared for it at any moment. I don't think the police should legally be allowed to take any pre-emptive action and I honestly don't care if an officer dies or not. They knew that was a possible end to their career when they started.
I feel like trying to turn some of my friends to the libertarian party. It is the only political ground,in my opinion, that actually allowss the freedoms all humans should have.
