Well the 4' tall is actually the important part. It's definitely possible to grow short plants, but you'll want at least 2' for plant space I think (and that number includes root space as well) plus you'll need about another foot for the light (reflector, and space from the bulb to the plant.) Now, if you only wanted to use part of that space, here's a filing cabinet that I modified one year. 18" x 24" by about 5 feet tall, still looked exactly like a filing cabinet on the outside, but the inside looked like this
Good news also, because that's portable (although not really since it weighs a good 45-50lbs when it's full.)

Building a container like a filing cabinet or box is your only option then. Pretty much everything else would be attached to the wall of the closet. Check out some of the grow tents though, they're cheap and easy as heck to use.
Soil or hydro would be fine. I like hempy's because you basically water them like soil, but with the growth rate and yields of hydro.
Smell can be controlled using small carbon filters like these but honestly with just one plant you probably won't need it.
and that cabinet cost me about $150 total.

Hempy's are easy as pie. Search around and you'll see how many threads there are about their awesomeness. Also, every single plant in my signature was grown in the hempy style with lucas formula. General hydroponics nutrients (only 2 bottles) watered every other day. That's seriously all there is to it.
I've got a thread on the shroomery somewhere but that was like 5 years ago when I built that so I don't know if I can find it anymore...

pretty much. It's more like this
reflector (about 9" tall)
space between light and plants so they don't burn (about 6"-10" or so)
Plants (about 12")
Pots or buckets (about 8")
So about 3' tall is minimum in my opinion for a solid grow. Using all 4 feet would be very grand

Now lets say I am going for max yield. Any Banzai like methods that could be used?
How many plants seemed the perfect fit for your cabinet?

hehe, you haven't done much reading have you? Search out the term "LST"
Don't let your plants grow straight up, tie them to the side so they take up the maximum foot print. Compare;
Now you tell me, under identical conditions which one of those two rooms do you think will yield more?

The top two pictures are from the same grow That's just the stem of one of the plants in that closet.

Nah, the root formula is for nothing but roots, That stem is due to me constantly bending and pruning those plants to be the exact shape I want

I used a 250W HPS for that cabinet. If money is not a concern I might recommend an LED panel for that space because I had a little trouble keeping it cool enough in there. Part of that might have been the magnetic ballast being inside the cabinet. If you had the ballast external to the cabinet and a digital ballast then it probably wouldn't be an issue

The LED will be around $300-$400 for a good one of sufficient power. I wouldn't recommend it if you're on a budget because a good HPS setup can be had for around $100 and will produce better yields, just slightly more heat

Absolutely. Like I said, I had the ballast inside the cabinet there, plus I didn't have an aircooled hood. Both of those made cooling it much harder. If you invest in a cool tube an mount the ballast externally then you should be more than okay with the HPS
