Nanooks Indoor Soil 1400w HPS/CFL Igloo *COMPLETE*
    #407433 - 04/27/10 12:45 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I figured I should stop lurking and post a record of what is happening in my (not so) frozen tundra.

Just got the bud room completed (mostly anyways)
4x8 ft
2x 400w HPS
1x 600w HPS
Soil - Foxfarm Happy Frog
Hesi and Foxfarm nutes

all plants are here on 24/0 atm while I clean and finish off the...

veg room
2.5x4.5 ft
2x~210w CFL arrays
FF Happyfrog
FF Grow Big w/ Big Bud + Superthirve in DH2O
or
Hesi TNT Soil Complex + SuperVit in tap (no pH adjustment needed with this)

I will start 12/12 when I get the veg room done. It needs a door, ventilation and shit... cleaning. It should be up by the end of the weekend. I will start taking more clones tomorrow. I'm still feeding veg nutes btw.

ATM I'm running only 800w due to heat. I have a 275cfm blower exhausting the room (4" duct) to the outside with home made dryer sheet air fresheners near the intake of the fan (they're doing the job quite nicely atm but i will be ordering a bucket of carbon or a pre-made filter soon).

Then there is 2 computer fans on an intake vent pulling cool air in at maybe 100-150cfm and a box fan at the end of the room with the vent pushing towards the plants and the exhaust on the opposite side.

This keeps it at 80-85f running 800w. If I go up to 1400w atm my temps go up near 100. I have an inline fan (blades, not impeller(is that right?)) I need to get new blades for but it spins at least 1000rpm so that has to be useful. Any suggestions on ventilation? HTG supply has cheap inline fans, the 8" pushes a lot, how loud are those things?

STRAINS!!!!
lets not forget those.

Diesel from G13 Labs
White Widow from Dynafem
Blue Widow from Dynafem
Blueberry of unknown origin
2 unknown, possibly purple, strains
2 bagseeds from some of the better mids around here of last year
6 bagseed from another batch of good mids (all confirmed female except this group of 6)
(bagseed plans to be put outside btw)
I also have a viable seed from some purple nurple, I'll give that a go for shits and giggles.

**pics will be up soon, I promise**

Soon to be veg room, needs door. I'm putting my aero-cloner together, that will be next to mommies and clones

Welcome to my humble abode!

The View to your right...

and to your left (well, i guess it's right in front of you) Most of these I just transplanted last night. I'm hoping that will take care of the burning/deficiency. I need to get an oscillating fan in there, that box fan pushes the ones in front a bit much.

Smaller group of 6 and 2 larger ones in front are the mids

A nice Blueberry bush

unknown 1 (the 4th pic has 8 more clones of these)

Stalk on the right is unknown 2

Diesel 1

Diesel 2 top

2 nice Blue Widow bushes

and the White Widow

That looks like nutrient burn to me.  How much in the way of ml's per gallon are they getting of the nutrient solution??  Are you monitoring pH?

they have all been getting the same until transplant: 15-18ml per gallon, the bottle says 50ml per 10L. now they are all getting plain water. When using the HESI nutes in tap water the pH is always 7. I haven't tested any runoff though.

It seems the unknown strain (the 8 clones, some with burning) can't handle as many nutes as the other strains :frown: or there was just salt buildup. Either way they got transplanted so that should help.

I'll have to dial it back and see what happens when I start feeding again.

ALSO I have to spray for spider mites. They showed up a month ago and I got some Azamax. It worked great, you're supposed to apply it 3 times over 30 days. I got lazy and only did it twice. Now there are very few, seemingly deformed, mites showing back up. This time they're not nearly as aggressive, there aren't any webs or anything. I figure 2 or 3 more applications and they will be gone.

Brand new Can Fan - 8" High Output 737cfm

That should do it nicely

This puppy if fucking awesome! It sounds like a jet engine when it starts up. I need to get a speed controller and they were out of them at the grow store when I went. Now I just need to figure out how to mount this.....

I also picked up a 50lb bale of

Sun Gro® Sunshine® Mix #4 Aggregate Plus Professional Growing Mix

I think this will work the best for me because I'll be using mineral based ferts with tap water so I don't want anything with organics in it.

Now I just have to finish my cloner and take cuttings then I can transplant the biggest six plants and start 12/12 after maybe a week? How long should I wait after transplanting to 5gal pots to start 12/12?

Clones!

So here is my cheap ass aeroponic clone box, sitting under 150-175w CFL

Made with a rubbermade tube that opens with a hinge. Inside we have 3x 6" air stones in about 2/3gal dH2O with ~2tsp H2O2 and ~10ml superthrive. pH was brought up to 6.5-7

PUMPS ON!

After about 5min this is what we want to see on the underside of the top

After taking cuttings they were placed in tap water ~room temp

Before placing into the cloner

Trimming to the proper height. The water level is about even with the line in the middle of the tub

In the box she goes

She sits in a piece of foam, the same kind I lined my room with, with a little foam boulder holder her steady

Trim the fat off

Three little White Widows. 2 of them are from the same branch, I want to see how they root

Fill the bitch up!

Check under the hood

Step back

And rejoice  :bigblunt:

Re: Nanooks 1400w Igloo FULL POWER! [Re: Nanook]
    #417020 - 05/13/10 01:43 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

So I just went full power last night and turned on the 600w after hooking up the fan and new duct. The Can fan replaced a Dayton 265cfm blower that will replace the two CPU fans on my intake.

Goodbye!

Temps before Can fan: 88-92F

Temps after Can fan: 86-88F but they have been rising, it's been cold here for this time of year and is getting warmer :frown: And that's with an extra 600w of lights.

I'm hoping that by making the blower an intake fan I will be able to lower the speed of the Can fan and reduce some of the noise but also make it cooler? There's a lot of noise btw, in my room (which has the igloo on one side and the duct running across the ceiling to the window) it sounds like there are two fans. One in the igloo and one at the window where the duct reduces from 6" to 4". I plan on replacing the reduction with an expansion to fit the whole window pane thereby opening the exit and reducing the noise. I also might order a duct muffler, I understand that would lower the noise outside?

I want air cooled reflectors but all the ones I've seen were at least $85 x 3 lights = $255. How much do you guys think that would lower the temps?

The plants are loving the extra light though  I decided I'm going to transplant the 10 plants I have in 1gal pots to 5gal pots and remove the extra plants. Some will go outside and some will go in the veg closet to be either the next round or mommies for the rounds to come... we'll see.

I'm using some temporary nutrients atm, I ran out of the HESI TNT veg nutes and the only place around me that sells it is a bit out of the way with shitty hours.

So I'm using Vigoro 10-10-10 liquid plant food I got last year from the Home de Pot. I mixed at a little less than 1/4 cap-full  which is ~1.5-2tsp in 2.5 gal of tap water with about 10-15ml of Superthrive, pH adjusted to 5.5-6. This will soon be going to all the plants in veg until I get more HESI. After I transplant they will be getting the HESI bloom complex and after 4 weeks the Phosphor Plus will be added. I'm still not sure if I should do 2 or 3... or even 4 week cycles

*more pics to come*

What exactly do you mean?  They look pretty large for rooting but as Magash says, if it's green he can root it, so I think it's fine.

That's all I was saying.  I just heard smaller cuttings root better and faster, because of the softer stem.  Chill duuude smoke a bowl, I'll see you soon for more plantation work.

Small update here, pics will follow tomorrow or the next day. I've been working shit-tons and haven't had as much time as I would have liked to spend with the plants. But that's changing though, so I will be getting more and more time to work with them as we get rolling here.

As a result, the clones suffered (3 survived and are now in dirt, growing nicely), but everything else is going fine.

The spider mites were still giving me trouble about a week and a half ago, i've sprayed with Azamax 2 times with that and plan to do it again this weekend. If you have to do this with more than a few plants or just a few large ones, INVEST IN A PUMP SPRAYER!(I got the 1gal one) Best $20 I've spent so far (this month). With all the plants to spray it was taking me over 2.5 hrs to move and thoroughly spray them with a trigger sprayer, i was getting cramps and blisters, refilling it every 20min, not so fun. With the pump sprayer, it holds 4 times as much, takes 30sec to pump up and you're good for 10-15min of spraying before needing to pump again.

Since 6/2 there have been 9 plants flowering under the full 1400w HPS, 3 Diesel, 2 Blue Widow, 1 Blueberry, 1 White Widow and 1 each of the 2 unknown strains. 2 weeks in and there are tons of hairs all over the place. I'm still bending these, but they have hit the walls and are falling on each other so there's not much room to go out, but we can go another 1.5-2ft up so there are still lots of room for more bud.

We also have 14, I think, plants under a 125w cfl that will be going outside tomorrow  I'm going to build a small green house (8x8 I think) for them on some secure property, plus this is a legal medical grow so that offers protection from the man.

Expect more ramblings and pics very soon.

PICS

Clones: The labels on a few of them got smeared off so they are a mystery.

These are all from unknown commercial grade bagseed, going outside soon.

Here are all the vegging plants that were under the hps, there is WW, BW, U1, and 6 Unknown Bagseed confirmed female. These will also be going outside.

And here we have Day 15 of flower, first a map of the garden, note the BW in both pics for orientation:

Diesel to the left, 3 plants of different seed from the same feminized pack. These were just turned around so the leaves facing us have yet to reorient themselves to the new light angles.

The BW in the center, under the 600w'er.

To the right, U1 in the back and WW in the front.

Here we go folks! It's about day 28 into bud here at the igloo, temps have been good, 81.5 to 86.5 F at day, 76ish at night. I will be starting soon with the HESI Phosphorus Plus at 20ml per 2 gal. The buds are getting bigger, thicker, frostier and stankier every day!

I have pics from day 25 and day 28 here, and honestly, most of them suck. My camera broke and the zoom lens is stuck out so I had to stand about 8ft away to get these pics, and it's hard to focus now. I should be getting a new one by the next update.

Day 25

BW

Diesel

Mostly BB and U1 and U2

Day 28

Unknown 1

Blue Berry

White Widow

Thanks man, the buds are getting better everyday, they all look so nice :hairmetal:

The WW has a nice skunky pine smell, the BB has hardly any smell, kind of sweet sativa fruity, but not strong yet. U1 is similar to the BB in smell but the buds are huge already. U2 smells of very sweet pine and the pistils are so damn thick on this strain, also very frosty   And the BW has a very sweet skunky odor with a hint of that sativa characteristic that's in the BB and U1, kind of a vegetable/planty smell. The Diesel however smells a bit more awesome than the rest, a lot like the BW but with a sharp soapy smell that is fucking delicious, it makes me almost cum all over the BW which are right at teabag height  :pimpslap:

After the last spraying with Azamax, the ends of many pistils have turned red/orange. It's most noticeable on the Blue Widow however the trichomes are clear as day.

OOOH! I just got the HESI Phosphorus Plus and started adding that at ~18ml per 2.5gal every watering. That will be increasing over the next 2 weeks until it peaks at about 22ml per 2.5galSpeaking of watering. I can't wait to see how they swell.

Would anyone recommend any of the additives you can buy for late flower boosting? Like Gravity and whatnot, or any thing else, not necessarily a "flower hardener".

Small update, I just installed a 32gal res tank, 265gph submersible water pump, 10ft of tubing terminating in a 2ft rain wand with breaker head. No more crawling around under my plants holding 20lb of water fully extended, away from my body, to get to the plants in the back. Now I just plug in the pump, aim the wand, turn the valve and drench my pots with nutrient solution.

The first fill was:
20gal tap water
320ml of HESI Bloom
150ml HESI Phosphorus Plus
16 drops HESI SuperVit

The pH seemed a little low, at about 6.2. My mom was talking to me when I was pouring the nutrients, I hope I didn't fuck that up. When I think about it, if I did I may have added about 80-100ml extra of the Phosphorus Plus @ 20gal is 32.5ml per ~10L which is about 8ml more than recommended, BUT I don't think I added that much though, I just doubt myself after testing the pH. I think the plants will be alright. I need to get a ppm meter (or EC) and pH pen. Any recommendations on cheap reliable testing equipment?

Anyways, the buds are getting much heavier and more resinous sense adding the Phosphorus Plus, many are falling over, luckily I just bought some 4ft bamboo stakes.

Re: Nanooks 1400w Igloo Blue Widow Smoke Test [Re: Nanook]
    #446027 - 07/13/10 05:59 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

OK, sorry for the triple post, no one seems to be commenting much

So 2 days ago, or 5.5 weeks flowering, I noticed a small bud on one of the Blue Widow plants that was (like many of the branches) tucked under the canopy. When I pulled it out into the light, like I always do, I noticed the hairs on it were about 80% red. So I clipped that little bitch off, cut it into tiny pieces and let it sit out for 2 days. I didn't think to look at the trichomes, I was pretty high off of all the Thai I've been getting lately. God I fucking love the Thai, pure sativa is a great buzz  If it didn't take 15 weeks to flower I might consider growing it more seriously.... anyways, it looked good enough for a test run. the dried bud was a nice full packed bowl in my spoon...

AND

Halfway through the bowl, I'm feeling very nice  :bigblunt:

It's pretty smooth, not much taste except for a hint of musky pine, maybe? The smell after I chopped it up was ~50% fresh plant smell and ~50% sweet skunk. After it dried the fresh plant smell was mostly gone and there was still a mild bit of skunk.

It's Blueberry component is very strong this early in it's maturity. I'm thinking of taking one of the two BW plants in about a week, then let the other one go to maybe 8 weeks. The buzz is all in the head, circling around my eyes and the back of my skull. Pretty relaxing too.

Sorry for the lack of pics, my camera is still fucked  :crankey:

yeah, that box fan is still kickin'

And you are right about the reflector! "What does he win, Bob?"

My dumb-ass old roommate got that a while ago and when I ended up with it it didn't have the ends on it. I did manually bend the sides out a little because the parts level with the bulb were almost vertical. But the other one I have on the other side of the room has the ends on it.

A bud preview, this time from Diesel#2

Day 46

My camera is still broke and getting pics under the HPS is hard. I will try to get more when the lights go out. I clipped this bud because of the red/white hair ratio. The trichs are 40/60 clear/cloudy. Only a few amber ones on the bud. It was off a lower branch that was about 30" away from the bulb. The buds within 15" of the bulbs are huge, fat, dense and much more resinous than this sample. The hairs up top are >20% red, lots of new hair growth lately.

Oh yes, that plant in particular, I think from all the supercropping. Any way, more pics!

But first! Just so you know, there has been a pH issue with a couple Diesels and U#2. pH of the runoff was <5.5 So I have been adding water with a pH of >8 to compensate as pulling them out to drench the pots would be a pain in the ass at this point.

I am now flushing all the plants but U#1 and the BB, watering with just water now at the start of week 8.

First the Veg closet, plants on the right are a friends, he put them in some crappy Miracle Grow soil and they are getting a little stressed as they get bigger, too many nutes I think?

Veg Closet atm

Big one's a male

Other large potted ones are confirmed fems, not sure if u can see in the pics

these are the old clones and the one in the back is from a friend, got a bit crispy and had 2 growth tips survive, it's been in new soil for a week now, doing good

found this little guy on one of the females, had to smash him, the stinger was intimidating, but he was no match :brucelee:

Now for some bud shots!

Blue Widow - harvested about 3/4oz I guess, 10% amber trichs, still lots of buds on those 2 plants, now some of the lower ones are getting more light.

I almost forgot! I fried my timer :frown:

I guess adding the dehumidifier to the power strip plugged into the timer was a bit too much. With the lights, fan AND the dehumidifier it was pulling close to or more than the 15 amps the timer was rated for.

I noticed when the lights didn't go out when they were supposed to. I went to check the timer and found it like this, it was all hot and soft, the switch inside melted I guess because it wouldn't turn off. Luckily I have like 3 other grounded timers.

Any recommendations for heavy duty timers that don't cost $200 like some I looked at?

Here are a few more pics. I clipped these buds the next day (day 57) from first the same BW plant as before, then a nice Diesel bud for good measure. Actually it was in the way. After trimming the BW buds I had room to move the 600W down a few inches and that Diesel bud was a little close to the bulb, had about 10% amber trichs and looked juicy as fuck. So I clipped it.

I gotta ask though, since it's bugging me. With such beautiful buds, you didn't feel the need to trim her down a little more?

Thanks for the appreciation. As for the manicuring style, I know leaves taste bad and have fewer trichomes, but I have found that the best cured buds I've had were cured with some leaf still on the bud. This could be a coincidence. I still want to try different things, like not manicuring until the bud is dry.

Anyways.... I have harvested all but 2 plants now. There is still 1 each U1 and U2 alive. I yielded more than I expected  :dancingbacon: I was hoping for 2-3oz per plant and I'm getting 3.5-4oz  :obama:

How 'bout some pics?

Lets start with some bud shots just after a few massive trim sessions:

U1 hanging up, mostly WW on the shelf

Wet WW taken @ 10.5 weeks 12/12

Wet U1 also 10.5wks

Wet U2 - 10.5wks just one bud, the rest of the plant is alive

After 1 week, the Diesels were taken

At that point, there was still the Blue Berry plant to trim

Now there has been some time for shit to dry and cure, so this is what we're looking at right now:

BW

U1

U2

WW

And this is the hash I've made so far with the BW trim

OK, so the growing is all done! (for this journal anyway)

I've still got a lot of hash to make, but for now, the final yields are as follows, all plants have been cut, trimmed, dried, and are curing in jars:

Unknown1 - 100.1g
Unknown2 - 98.5g
Blue Widow - 92.2g (off 2 plants)
White Widow - 159g
Blue Berry - 127.1g
Diesel #1 - 109g
Diesel #2 - 133.5g
Diesel #3 - 142.3g

TOTAL YIELD (without hash  ) - 961.7g or 2.146lbs
Grams/Watt - 0.687

I would have been happy with 1.5lbs, this is fucking great!

If I keep the plants smaller, more manageable, and pack more of them into the room I should be able to get a lot closer to 1g/w.

I plan on air cooling my lights soon, then I can add co2  I should be hitting at least 3lbs next run. UNLESS I stagger the introduction of new clones into the flowering room, which might happen.

I also want to go organic soil-less, got some coco coir and FF Light Warrior, I hear those 2 make a great mix, I'm trying it out with some small clones, seems to be doing well.

I will report back after the hash is all made and dry.

nice stuff man!!! ive always liked to keep abit of trim on since i dont really make hash outta it(though i should) when its all dried and cured it does seem to taste better thats just me though. plus i use it to med myself once in a while which helps with the potency problems ive encountered with "pure buds" or leaf less buds

Good work insane yield!

AWESOME RESULTS MAN THOSE ALL LOOK SUPER DANKKKKK

i know this is super old just happened to come across it, not a lot of people break down yields like you did that's very useful.  If you don't mind me asking how many gallons were the pots you used?  I think a lot of people worry more about the lights then they do about the pots lol.  I know a few kids who grew medicinally and since they limit your number of plants they figured fuck it and grew in 30 gallon beasttttt pots.  Well they got about 2 FUCKING POUNDS per plant!!

lol, HOW FUCKING IRONIC IS THIS: I just smoked the last joint of that Diesel, like 20min before seeing this thread got bumped. It was way brown, still smelled OK when I broke it up. I'm pretty high, nice tingly body stone. I was looking for a small jar to cure a test bud of my current grow and found that

I think the pots were the same 4 and 5 gal pots I'm using now. You're totally right about the med state thing, bigger pots and plants with smaller numbers = the bountifuls.

But I think you would have to veg for more than 5 or 6 weeks to make a pot larger than 5gal worth it. Maybe not though. Anyways, I'm switching to hydro next time around, so... less constricted roots means faster and larger, more vigorous growth.

Eh, yield really end up being the same in hydro.  Although you can have a little quicker turn around time.

I don't veg anywhere near 5-6 weeks and mine are in 35 gallon pots.

So, how long do you veg to fill out a 35gal pot? And how much do you spend on dirt? How much space does that vegged out plant take up and how much do you yield off it?

35.0 gal = 4.5xxxxxx cbft

The biggest bag of FFOF you can buy is 12$/ 1.5 Cubic feet. Soo.. Id say 4 bags of FFOF (4 x any 1.5 cubic ft bag)

So I transplant once from a 3 gallon bag into my 35 gallon tub.  2 plants per tub.  2 plants per 1000 watt light.  My plants if you were to measure them from the base of the stalk at ground level would be about 3.5 feet tall, this strain stretches like a mofo.  Yield on last 3000 watt grow 3.5 pound.  Should be a touch more this time.

Yeah that is a pretty nice yield someone we know here grew in 30 gallon and spent the money to give each plant a 1000 watt light all to themselves.  Sure there were other factors involved like the strains and I think they fim'd all of them.  But those motherfuckers pulled 2.5 pounds a plant and had 12 of them!!  12,000watt grow with 2.5 pounds per light! Damnn lol
