ASPEN, CO (NBC) - Thousands of people are traveling to Colorado to attend a festival that gives new meaning to the phrase Rocky Mountain high.
In a town known for fashion, skiing, stars and scenery, Bart Gunderson is as busy as ever organizing something a little different in Aspen.
"One of the most dynamic, magical places in earth," Gunderson said.
The first ever Western Slope Cannabis Crown Festival is being held under the lights of the crystal chandeliers at the St. Regis, complete in true Aspen form with hemp fashion shows, booths showing the benefits of medical marijuana, and even the advantages of security cameras for marijuana grow operations.
And much like a beer festival, there's a separate side where some 100 growers are showing their marijuana strains for competition.
"You can actually see the different strains and that's the word strains that contestants have entered," festival organizer Pia Reynaldo said.
While anyone with $25 can pick up a ticket and head inside the convention area, anyone wanting to see where the growers are showing their different stains has to first fill out paper work, show their medical marijuana card, then get a green wrist band.
"Green for patient, and they have a card, and present it to us," Reynaldo said.
Organizers said the festival is more about information, which is why Bart said he plans on growing his budding event next year.
"It is a growing industry," Gunderson said. "It's an industry that's exploding in an economy that's ripe."
Gunderson said Aspen is made for a marijuana festival.
