Hey everyone, im starting my first grow. Right now im growing Auto Lowryder #2, AK-48, and Northern lights special.
Im using a mix of MG organic Mix potting soil and perlite. Lowryder
Mexican Sativa Bagseed
AK-48 on left Northern lights special on the right
Overall Setup
any info or tips would be greatly appreciated. Also, i was wondering... why are the seedlings growing so tall? i Figured it was because of the light not putting out enough power... Its a FL grow light i got from walmart for 10 bucks lol
UPDATE APR 6th: Lowered the light and covered the stems up another inch and a half with dirt.
UPDATE APR 8Th: Went and bought an extension cord, 3 sided extension sprocket, and 3 100W equiv. CFL's that are 5000k and are 1750 lumens. they are now hanging within 5 inches of the plants. i still have that light of america grow light on them too. Also my northern lights special is sprouting.
UPDATE APR 9th: Got another Y adapter and two more CFL's. They are 75W equiv. put out 1100 lumens each and are 3500k. pix in a sec
Lowryder... doesnt look to hot
left to right, AK48, mexican whatever, NLS.
All mexican unknown strain. seems to be doing the best
My new lighting layout
And overview

That's not a CFL (compact fluorescent light), however it is fluorescent. It's made by lights of america and is only 17 watts of 6500k light.

I'm currently experimenting with a first grow so I shouldn't really be giving any advice to anyone but, you asked so here's the skinny...
Will that be enough light? For what exactly? That's not really enough light to do anything, to be honest. But, if you're gonna use it, take that retarded plastic shielding off from around the bulb. It blocks light and traps heat.
Next, lower your light (or raise the plants) so that the light is within just a very few inches of the plant tops. You'll have to keep a check on them regularly to make sure they don't grow into the light and burn, though at 17 watts, it really shouldn't be much of a concern, lol.
What are your plans with your grow? What type of lighting are you planning on vegging with / flowering with? You're gonna need quite a bit more than that one 18" fluorescent tube. Exactly how much more is dependent upon the application. I think the rule of thumb is that a grower should strive for 50watts per square foot. Please don't quote me on that, I'm a noob and don't have this stuff quite committed to memory.
There are loads of posts archived, a majority of them dealing with issues of lighting. Also, have a look at the grow logs section and see what others are using. My grow log is linked just below my signature if you'd like to have a look at what I have going with CFL's. Only 150 watts, flowering and it's doing a pretty decent job so far, I think.
I wish I could be more help but, I'd rather say too little than steer you in the wrong direction. Good luck!

if you can find cfl bulbs cheap, buy 3 y adapters, and a single socket to plug adapter, and extention cord of your choice, and 4 Cfl bulbs, up to 200watt equivilant bulbs(42w actually). using 4 100w equivilant bulbs gives you 400w worth of light, and it dosen't get really hot, so you can hang it right over your plants. and... when i made mine, each one(cord, 4bulbs, 3 y-adapters, and the adapter to plug) was about 23$. just duct taped all the joints together so they won't come undone and hung it from the extention cord itself and have no issues. they're the cfl's hanging in the pictures of my flowering chamber... if they're in the picture.. most of the time i move them cuz they're pretty bright.

yeah, that's a nice ballast/hood/bulb combo. just as long as that ballast isn't a POS.
in my cabinet, i have two of the 400w cfl clusters i mentioned, plus a 400w hps light.

i dont see myself investing much more into this. i figured since its only a 4 foot cubic space, 300W should be fine. i also have that other tube going.

you want those cfl's as close as you can to the plants.. like... a couple inches away.

You wait until you trim them off at harvest time, then collect trim and make hash.

I suppose so, they are not going to be at peak potency until harvest time, probably still pretty strong though. If you were gonna do that, I would just clip the leaf off and smoke the whole thing.
