Question from a Noob
#392269 - 03/29/10 05:01 PM (14 years, 7 months ago) |

Well I have grown in the past in soil with CFL, I am gona be stepping up to a ebb+flow system. I will have a 2x2 table for veg and a 3x3 for flowering. So I am putting my shrooms away for awhile lol
My question is I was thinking about a 400 or 600 light for the flower and a 250 for the veg table. Does this sound good ? Also what is the area of coverage for the lights ? I can't seem to find the answer.
Thanks in advance for your help.

The rule of thumb is 50 Watts per square foot. So a 250 by that logic would be perfect for a 2x2 table. A 600 would be good for the 3x3.
Trying to find light coverage is not exactly what your looking for. Obviously, a 400watt light could like up tons of area. This is why they use HID bulbs in street lamps. That's probably why you can't find the answer, because your not trying to figure out how much area the lights can illuminate. Rather your trying to reach a target amount of lumens per square foot.
Like I said, 50watts per square foot and then it's all a question of distance really.

On a 2by2 veg table and a 3by3 foot flowering table I would ditch the 250watter and use a 400 watt metal halide bulb on your 2by2 table and a 600 watt high pressure sodium bulb for your 3by3 foot flowering table. The 400 and 600 watt lights are a better match for your table sizes. Ebb and flow is a good choice for an introduction to automated hydroponic growing.

More watts the better as always. 250watt is fine for a 2x2 as well.

Absolutely 100% agree with you. 250 is the minimum requirement for that space.

I would vote that a 400W is a waste for a small area like 2x2 you really don't need that much light for vegging, 4 square feet is freakin' tiny

Meh. I like power. 4 squared feet is small but you will get more light intensity with a 400 watt close to the canopy thus more robust rapid growing plants. 4 feet squared is actually snug for a four hundred watter. I wouldn't necessary be so quick to call it a waste. This would depend on the individuals personal goals for growing cannabis.

for flowering I'd agree with you in a heart beat, but I notice that after a certain point during veg you're just not getting anything more out of your extra lighting

Interesting stance. I disagree. In my opinion, its a question of efficiency and of course personal finances.

The question of finances and efficiency are personal preferences in and of its self. If I can I always splurge on my girls. I am aware of the predetermined boundries for growing cannabis the most efficiently and with minimal finances. So I guess Spency I can agree to disagree with you..
Grow lovely!

Thanks for all the input guys. I really appreciate it. Finances are not really a problem but space is and that is the reason for the small 2x2 and 3x3 ebb+flow systems.

Everything in my signature was grown with lucas formula. You decide if you'd be happy with those results

Yep, but I generally go as high as 0-10-20 or even 0-12-24 during peak flowering if the strain can handle it.
