i recently bought a new 600 as a sister for the one in already had. this one i bought has a metal ballast that hums quite and also was hot to touch. this morning it did not kick on so i changed fuses.still nothing.the power is running through the same 4-way as the other light and that is working fine. i know nothing about how to fix a broken ballast if that is what it is. the ballast makes no noise at all when plugged in with tested fuse. what to do? if anyone can help me with this it would be a great help, all the best

I think it sounds like you need to just get it exchanged. faulty ballasts like that should be covered under the manufacturers warranty since you've only had it for 3 weeks

Was it a magnetic ballast? Probably a blown capacitor.

thanks for the replies-i bought this off ebay - will have to contact the seller. it has a local hardware store plug on it so they might have put it together themselves. if they won't exchange it can i simply replace the ballast for a modern one?

If they won't replace it, you should fight them on it. If you just wanna get a new one, keep in mind different sockets have different plugs that may not match up to the new unit. If you're handy it would be easy to just swap the old style plug from the broken unit to the new ballast, or really I think they make adapters, then you wouldn't void any warranty by opening the unit.

Don't think the problem is caused by a faulty plug. If you bought some homemade ballast, well, most likely you're shit out of luck here. I always follow the "you get what you pay for" rule when buying equipment. Sometimes it's better to spend the extra dough rather then try and skimp on an integral part of your grow.

Were you saying you changed house fuses, or the actual ballast fuse?
