Jumping Spiders
    #38384 - 05/24/08 11:20 AM (16 years, 6 months ago)

I was thinking about killing this guys, he lives with my seedlings. hes been staying in there with them for the past week or so. I looked them up on wiki and im not so sure if this is good or bad.

Quote:

Even if there are no spiders that are pure herbivores, there are some jumping spiders which include nectar and pollen in their diet (Jackson et al., 2001). So far none are known to feed on seeds. When insects land on plants such as the partridge pea, which offers the spiders nectar through their extrafloral nectaries, the jumping spiders help protect the plant in return by killing and eating insects that might damage the plant.

Since females dont produce pollen, Im thinking about keeping him in there. It says hel eat insects that might harm the plant. Im not sure what I should do keep him or kill him?

Is it just one spider? Personal preference if it is and he isn't actually harming the plants in any noticeable way.

Got a picture? :stoned:

Yea its just one for now from what ive seen, until his female lays her eggs, Im not sure if he has a female and/or eggs. He hasnt harmed the plants but Ive seen him around quite a bit. My pc cord dropped into some lemon juice i had sitting in a bowl on the ground and it messed up so I cant upload no pics to my pc.

I guess il keep him and if I ever encounter spider mites, Il keep an eye on him to see if he eats them.

jumping spiders, if im not mistaken are ground spiders. if he does anything he'll burrow into your soil and keep the bad bugs away.

theres a few spideys that will use your plants...

not sure exactly what kind.

the first pic is a hole that one made(dont know how) and then proceeded to grab leaf tips and pull them into its hole and make a "tunnel"

the second pic is a wad of leaf that was balled up by a spider of some sort.

and the 3rd is a harmless spider that will help keep the bad bugs away.

but its a pain in the ass tryin to pick webbing out of your buds so its up to you whether you leave them or not

i think a jumping spider is fine, a praying mantis would be cooler...

but i dont think that spider would hurt your plants, or even stay on the plant that long. jumping spiders (or the ones im familiar with) are prowlers and walk around they dont really set up base in one spot too long.
