This is usually an error related to tracking cookies.
Visit http://www.growery.org/forums/fixcookies.php - that will clear your cookies for this site and spit you back to the login page. Once you login again, you shouldn't see the PM notification icon unless you have a PM. You can of course clear your cookies manually as well.

I have the same issue. I delete all cookies every time I log off though. I do it a couple ways which are probably redundant but I use the windows function 'disc cleanup' as well as CCleaner so 
It's not that big a deal but it's a classic case of bait and switch!!
Get me thinking that someone has something clever to say to me then BAM.... there's nothing there.

Google how to manually remove all cookies and settings for this site...its different on all browsers or id tell you how or you ccan tell me the browser and ill tell you
that link doesnt completely work all of the time and ive cleared that with Ythan he told me about what I said above and its fixed everyones problems ive ever come in to

Yeah, I've been a lurker and finally decided to plug in to the growery for the intelligent discussion and all the lolz.
Oh, and I use firefox.

change to google chrome
or at least use it and keep firefox...thats what i did

change your browser...if it still does it then it may be a site issue
if not then its your computer

this may seem a little extreme
but,
uninstall IE...firefox....back your stuff up though
and download google chrome
see if it works
and if so then cool and you can reinstall the other browsers if you want
thats the only way i can be sure its not a site problem...even though i cant do anything about it
