i didn't get to see the game last night in hd. I wish i would have. I have a few hd channels. CBS is one and pbs is another. i know how you feel dudetron. I knew I wanted a sony tv that was 46 in with 120 hz but from there they seem to have a lot of options still. I seems like their product catalog is infinite.

I wanted to get a 47" screen, but I think my space and budget is going to limit me to a 42". Vizio has a real nice model for a good price over at sams that I'm thinking about.

Yes, they have tons of different models, mine is KDL46W5150. It didn't have the netflix streaming out of the box, I had to do a software update on the TV then it got a bunch of new features. Thats the only good thing about sony sets, they have software updates. It can also stream some other crap like blip.tv/wired/epicurious recipe videos and bunch of random internet TV sites, its nuts to me what tvs can do these days, all i really do with it is ps3 and stream netflix for movies/tv shows

Wow, I hadn't even though of that man... We had internet TVs years ago but they sucked and I'm not sure why cause I never had one, but imagine watching YouTube on your TV. Why not?
I was thinkin about refresh rate and contrast ratios and stuff... I though those specs were important for seamless explosions and video games.

somewhere in the settings menu, i had to dig around to find it, also your tv might not have it. Does it have an ethernet port on the back? i have it plugged directly into my home router.

plasma > lcd as far as picture quality. yes, it will put off more heat, use more energy, and be a little heavier... but the tv will also be less expensive and provide a much better picture. if you're going 42 inches i'd suggest plasma for sure.

vizio, insignia, dnyex, westinghouse, etc...

Actually rear projection CRTs still produce the best quality image, but you hardly see anyone buying those anymore.... Both LCD and Plasma have their pros and cons, one isn't better than the other flatout, depends on what you're looking for. Each new generation of LCD sets is getting better, especially the new "LED" backlit sets. I wouldn't go as far to say the picture looks "much better" - refresh rates are getting very fast on LCDs, and the blacks are getting just as deep. Plasmas are more cost-effective in the 50 inches+ range still though.
Also like USG is saying top tier brands include Samsung/LG/Sony at the moment, so going with a cheap brand will cost you more in the long run.

i agree with you. think you misunderstood me though.
i was just talking about LCDs and Plasma's. if you notice i made no mention of CRTs. i was also generalizing. of course in some situations LCDs will outperform Plasmas, and different needs require different ends.
for example, if you compare similar priced new model lcds and plasmas, generally the plasmas will provide a "much better" picture. the darks will be truer and darker (new LCDs with the LED backlight do rival the blacks of Plasmas), there will be less blur, and better viewing angles.
however if you are sitting in a room with lot of light and always directly in front of the LCD... LCD might be the way to go. the plasmas generally reflect more light and are not as bright (however some new Plasmas are coming with anti-reflective coatings). LCDs are also much cooler (if heat is an issue), and consume less energy. they also weigh significantly less. it's also hard to find a plasma under 42 inches (and if you do generally the LCD will provide more bang for the buck). but LCDs top out at around 52 inches unless you find some very ludicrously priced ones. it is also interesting to note that LCDs generally provide a better native resolution (pixels on screen).
and i didn't mention CRTs because they are way too bulky in my opinion. i would rather sacrifice a little quality to have a much smaller and lighter plasma or lcd. i think the majority of people would agree with me, as plasmas and lcds are far more popular today.
In short, the best bang for the buck in a dark room is Plasma (between LCD and Plasma). LCDs are catching up quickly though especially with LED backlighting.

I thought the lifespan of both LCD and Plasma are nothing compared to a CRT and that either the plasma OR the LCD (I think it's the plasma) burn out within a couple years or something ridiculous like that. Actually... then there's dead pixels with the LCDs too right?

Yeah CRT is probably better than both. But LCD's are better than plasma. Also LED might be a good option.
