I like the DIY/Low-tech aero-setup you got going?
Care to elaborate on it?

yeah the fence posts are actually sold only about a 45 min drive from my house. he carries 4x4 and 5x5 of any length up to 20 feet and he custom cut my holes on his CAD-assisted press mill for free! I only paid $25 today for materials plus all cutting labor! very cool guy who I will definitely be doing business with in the future.
nightgrower- I basically just looked at a bunch of different DIY aeroflo type setups like Frizzlemans and designed it to fit my room. nothing too fancy, just a 550gph pump with some 1/2" ID hardline plumbing tube and 14 360 degree sprayers from GH. only about $100 in total

Awesome job man Hope your aero experiment goes well. Going hempy has definitely got me a lot more interested in hydro. Once I get a bigger room I'll be able to set up a nice hydro system.

haha that's exactly how it is hempy was SO much better than any other method I had tried, I just can't help but step it up a bit. I'm going to grow some hempys alongside the aero this round and really see how they stack up.

Just that one mainly just seedlings in there right now so nothing too exciting to talk about. I'm still kind of adjusting to the system for the most part. I really want to be able to fill it with clones though...

the seedlings are Big Momma (Master Kush x Orange Crush). I've grown it from seed twice and liked it so much that this time I'm trying to get a mom plant started. awesome strain.
the clones are 2x pineapple express and 2x Bubblegum. same as my last grow, but this time in aero

Alright Frizz I took some pictures just for you because you said that you wanted some updates in this thread
they're growing pretty fast, but they're also pretty droopy for some reason. I'm thinking I don't have enough dissolved 02 in my water or something. They basically just look overwatered to me.... which I guess in an aeroponic system can only really mean one thing right? should I maybe invest in a timer to spray for 1 minute and then 4-5 minutes off or something? They also have barely any roots on the bottom which is weirding me out a little bit, but I'm guessing it has something to do with the overwatering. When they have access to so much food and water right now they don't really have any incentive to produce more roots.... any ideas?
here's some pics;

The roots will still grow but since they don't need to grow to survive, they don't. You need to put an airstone in your res or allow the roots to dry out a little. I have an aero system running the pumps 24/7 but I also have a industrial air line running thru it, another thing I want to note is check your water temp because if its too hot or too cold it cant dissolve as much O2 as needed.

yeah man, I don't have a better timer (actually I DO, but the friend I lent it to lost it ) so I just leave them going non-stop. you think a better investment would be a timer or an airstone?
I don't have tons of money.... I guess I need to decide between an airstone, timer (the good minute timers are like $90) or water chiller (~$400)

Hey harry what is your PH? What nutes are you using? What is your PPM? Make sure you have the water just flow right out dont. I dont have an airstone at all and my pump is on 24/7....mine looked that way when I had a ph problem and they looked that way when I tried to raise my water levels

I'm using GH flora micro and flora bloom as my nutrients at about half strength for what I use in flowering. I think it's about 500-600ppms, but basically it's the same formula I use in my hempys.... the pH is hard to tell exactly, but using one of those vials where you drop the indicator into solution it's reading perfectly yellow... which I'm interpreting as almost exactly 6. should I lower it even a tad further?

oh and also, I have the far side propped up about 3 inches above the tank side so it's draining very quickly. maybe my pump is too pussy? I have a 550gph pump with 10 sprayer heads.... wondering if I need to have them shooting harder so it makes a finer mist or something

My rule of thumb is 20gal per mister but what you have to remember is your pump power is in gph but you have your misters running at minph since they need constant pressure not slow buildup like in a ebb&flo. Your pump should be good though.

Dude I was so baked when I wrote that, it shouldnt be minutes per hour it should be gallons per minute
That droopiness is a real cluster fuck, your temp is reasonable and your pump is good, I would say check your pH and see also if your under feeding maybe. The only other thing I could say is maybe your spray isnt fine enough so you would have to run your pump like 2min on 5min off

any recommendations on where to find a timer that can do 1 minute increments that's not $100? Also, I thought droopy leaves was a sign of over feeding, I was prepared to back off my nute solution a little bit but you're saying I should step it up?

nope, I wouldn't step it up, it looks like overfeeding to me too, which I thought might have been because water level in the chambers was high like a deep water culture......
i'm really confused here....you should be seeing MASSIVE growth. The pump and how long they are on should not be an issue really unless this strain just really does not like to be sprayed 24/7. I found this timer, not sure how good it is and its a bit pricey
http://www.hydroponics.net/i/131237
If I were you I would try from seed

those plants did come from seed. they're growing, but not super fast. I have them in rapid rooters.... I'm wondering if the rapid rooters retain too much water or something....
here's the most recent picture of them. As you can see they're definitely growing, but not nearly at the rate I would expect from an aero system. also sorry these pics are so blurry, it's currently lights off so my cam had a hard time focusing, but I think the pics are good enough for you to see how they're progressing.
I've found tons of timers like that but I don't really want to drop $120 on a timer just to hope that it works. I need to KNOW that's the solution before I can justify spending that kind of cash right now.

I also wanted to add that the plants are not nearly that yellow looking in real life. I think that's just another byproduct of my camera being confused by dark picture times

The rapid rooter plugs may be the issue, im thinking that to much water retention in those plugs could be hurting the roots a bit, I have foam plugs for mine, which were not easy to start seeds in but they dont hold all that much water....
I dont blame you for not wanting to drop money when you are not positive that is definitely the problem. I think the spray might be a bit to strong...my sprayers dont spray that hard so my roots have tiny little hairs on them, I see yours looks a little like string rather then a network of smaller and smaller roots.....is there a way to weaken that pump for a few days to see if that is the problem?

hmmm.... I'm not sure to be honest. it really doesn't spray that hard though.... maybe I can just angle all the sprayer heads to point away from the roots so that the water splashes off the walls and loses some velocity before hitting the roots. I'll give that a try I guess

alright friz, someone on ICmag claims to have figured it out. and looking at the pics of our two grows it seems he may be right.
the only difference between our two setups right now is that mine have the neoprene inserts over the net pots and yours don't. he was claiming that this suffocates the roots and causes them to look like they're not breathing properly even if your res is completely okay in every way. very interesting. I just took them off so we'll see in a couple days.
I got you some root porn too

like I said before, any less than 2z and I would be completely stunned. especially if you found the funding for another 400W in there.
I'll definitely keep everyone posted on how they look in a day or two. hopefully this solves it, but if not I guess I'll mess around with pump timing some more

They don't look too much better this morning but it's only been about 12 hours so I'm wondering if they maybe just need more time to fully recover. There's been a little improvement but I have to admit they're not quite as good as I thought they would be at this point. I'm going to go to the store today and get a pump timer and some better sprayer heads to hopefully keep the roots a bit happier

what kind of spray heads to you have? I forgot to ask, I am using 360 from the ez cloner system.....
maybe put an airstone in your res also

I just added an airstone a couple days ago but I'm wondering if my air pump might be a little anemic for my res size. I don't know what kind I have, some 360 sprayers but they're dark green. I have one lighter green one that I bought at a different location and instead of the flat bottom it has a 45 degree angle and the increased flow rate from the angled bottom creates a totally different spray pattern. I'm gonna go pick up about 20 of those and see what comes of it.

ok so I just bought a new pump. Instead of a pump for a 20 gallon tank I upgraded to an 80, and I got a new timer so I'm running 15 on 30 off. I hope that's sufficient for them to recover because I REALLY don't want to drop $150 to run extremely short spray cycles. 2 second waterings sound awesome to me, but that's just more cash than I want to spend right now....
oh, and it's nighttime in there so I'm leaving the current sprayer nozzles on, I'll change them out when it's daytime, in like 4 hours or so.
do you think 30 minutes of pump-off time is too much when the lights are on? I don't want to kill them via dehydration either

My theory is pH spikes. Constant back and forth changing of the pH.

nah dude definitely not pH spikes. I check it about 4 times a day but haven't had to adjust it for a week and a half now. it's at about 5.8 every single time

yeah def not PH, your theory is kind of like the cell theory, we know that shit isnt true but we dont really know the right answer yet.

Your probably right. I was just thinking since there's no buffer its hard to stabilize.
Like if you have a pH of 7 your water wants to be 7. You can lower it but it will fluctuate back and fourth. It can happen so fast you couldn't accurately test for it with your type of test. Pot might be more tolerant.
This is all coming from my knowledge on fish keeping. I'm not sure how well it translates to growing. I used this in my Mosura dwarf shrimp because any type of pH fluctuation will kill them instantly. A digital would be ideal of course. I really don't need the alert any more because I buy a pH buffer/soil for the tanks that keeps it always at 6. Here's a link to the stuff. http://www.adgshop.com/Aqua_Soil_Amazonia_p/104-021.htm
Adding water starts a fluctuation cycle also. But you said you haven't had to add any in 5 days or so.
It's just so weird. I've seen that exact growth before and it was caused by dying roots. You need to figure out the cause asap b4 its too late. Don't want to see those babies die =(

Me either! I figured Harry would hit a home run on his first go round with this system.
You'll figure it out man. Seems like whenever I have a problem that affects the health of a plant, I usually don't figure it out and fix it until the plants are suffering bad, and they usually bounce back pretty fast.
I don't have problems like that much anymore but I'm just saying, you'll figure it out and save them, I have faith in you... haha

yeah to be honest I was expecting this to be fairly easy... I can't imagine why I would be having this much trouble with this new system. there's just one tiny issue nobody has thought of yet, and I'm confident as soon as I get it figured out this'll all be perfect.
and if you don't have problems anymore then that just means its time for you to try a new method

God fuck me....
Ok, so I noticed some brown spots inside the channels and realized I had some algae growth. my first grow ever was a DWC that resulted in 3 of my 4 plants dying due to algae, so I don't fuck around anymore and immediately went on the offensive.
I disassembled EVERYTHING in the entire setup and even went as far as using a Q-tip to scrub the inside of the water lines and I bought new sprayer heads to replace the old algae covered old ones. I used a solution of physan20 and good 'ol H2O2 and a green scrubby to completely scour the inside of the tub, the inside of the channels, and then ran the solution through the system (without plants) for 2 hours to disinfect the internals of my pump as well. I also (and I hope this didn't do more harm than good) took the plants out of the net pots and soaked the hydroton in the same solution and a much more dilute solution for the roots of the plants. the plants were very recently transplanted so they hadn't really grown into the hydroton much, but there was definitely some snotty goop on the plugs and the roots so I think this was worth it even if it's gonna shock them.
And then I did one more crazy thing. I was thinking about the algae and where it came from and I realized that this design allowed way too much light into the reservoir.
So after way too much work and engineering I now have this;
thoughts?

light is what creates the algae, as you know. i did a dwc last year and even went as far as to cover some cracks with an old t shirt. as long as there's no light, you shouldn't have any algae. i would think anyway, not sure if there's anything else that could cause the algae, again, i'm a newb.

yeah some people can get away with it, but I figured I couldn't rule it out as an issue until I at least did something about it. Plus, I definitely had some sort of brown snotty growth in the channels and on the roots, so it just seemed like another possibility
Plus, I live in a house with 4 college age guys. My grow room is immaculate but I don't have filtered air intake on it, so quite frankly I can practically guarantee some spores from some old food or something will get in there eventually.

That brown gunky stuff, now I cant say for sure but when ever I see that in my channels it always means my roots are dying somewhere or about to, watch that shit closely man.

*sigh* I dunno man... they're doing better but I'm still pretty frusterated. my room temp is around 80 degrees and I'm guessing that means that my water temps are at a similar temperature. I don't have any algae growing but the plants still look just as droopy. I honestly don't have any more money to invest into this project right now, and with some top-quality clones on the way very soon I really don't want to risk it. I'm thinking I'm probably going to disassemble the system later this week and just fill my room with hempys for one last go. once I take a little medicine to clubs around here I'll have some money to invest into this project and I'm going to give it my full go. I'm not setting down this project for good, but I think it's definitely going to have to take a back seat for awhile
I was trying to start flowering in the next 2 weeks so I could harvest by 4/20 but after all this nonsense there's no way I can make that now... I don't want to risk delaying my schedule any further

OK..... soo.... looking waaay way freakin' better now that they're in hempy cups. definitely showing some good recovery and barely curled at all on the leaves, but now I'm a little bit concerned with the yellow spots on the fan leaves. Do you guys think this is just an expression of the stress they're recovering from or is it a deficiency/disease that I should be concerned with? if it's a disease I really don't want it spreading to my new clones... Thoughts?
and some root porn from my bubblegum just for the hell of it.

and I think you're going to get closer to plants like that than you realize if you keep the temps at a reasonable level in your closet

which ones? Advanced Nutrients has like 75 different products so you'll need to specify. The base nutes Sensi A and B and Connoisseur A and B are supposed to be awesome for flowering but if you did that you'd need to not use foxfarm with it. I heard Big Bud, Bud Candy, Sensizyme and carboload are supposed to be pretty awesome too but there's a pretty significant amount of snake oil in their brand I reckon.
Honestly I've been really wanting to try them out recently too. everyone I've read that's switched over experienced a significant increase in yield.

Actually fox farms has a micro called Cha Ching, just dont know if I should use it or not. Im starting to see significant signs of heat stress on my babies so I went ahead and ordered another 80 cfm booster fan to help out the one I already have.....hopefully that will cool down the light enough to make it cooler in there. I might grow another 4 in another smaller closet for my next go this way im pretty much guaranteed 12 z's per grow assuming 1z as a bench mark. I was really disappointed with a grow I did at my last place, maybe like 10 grams a plant....lol it was crap

I agree.
The powder goes so much farther than the liquid. There are literally hundreds of doses in the small bottle (1 Lb.).
I'm picking up Beastie Blooms next time I hit the Hydro store. (Tomorrow)
Open Sesame is only used to stimulate the onset of flowers, While Beastie Blooms and Cha Ching are used to really bulk up and harden flowers, from what I've learned.
I'm not using Open Sesame because they are 25 bucks a pop and 50 bucks for bloom nutes is enough for me Not to mention I've fed w/ CC for a week now and am really liking what I've seen, plus it keeps the pH at a more reasonable level (6.5).

Do you know how BB and CC compare to Big Bud and Overdrive by Advanced?
I've been reading all these side by side comparisons recently and I'm starting to think I have no choice but to try advanced. People who were getting 1lb per 1KW are suddenly pulling 1.8-2lbs with genetic clones and the exact same grow space. Not just the 80% yield increase but they're saying the potency and the flavor all increased too. Sounds too good to be true...

Unfortunately I haven't tried anything from AN, but I have heard tons of hype behind their products, but I just can't find myself spending that much, just to get a "complete" spectrum of nutrients, when I can have 3 bottles that cover the entire spectrum (FloraNova or the Flora-3-Pack).
You have more resources than me, so maybe you should just get a simple set that covers all your bases and try a run with 1/2 using your regular nutrients, and give the other half the AN
Can't think of a simpler way to test it...

I started with Canna and Advanced Nutrients using the bells and whistles with AN and then switched to General Hydroponics using the basic 3part + koolbloom and I get comparable results for a fraction of the cost.
I wouldn't recommend AN to anyone as they have far too many products and recommend god damn every single product and the nutrients are overpriced. Big Bud and Barricade are the only additives I found to be cost effective.
The connoisseur line sucks balls too, they have had multiple bad batches from what I've seen posted on other forums.
General Hydroponics for the mother fucking win, I'm going to get a lineup of house and garden or dutchmaster next to see if I like them. I've used DM zone but would like to try the gold line. The foliage sprays seem promising.

Yeah house and garden is supposed to be really good too.
here's my main thing though; the high levels of phosphorus in GH nutes can't be that good for you. They have some of the highest P levels in the business, and elemental phosphorus is extremely reactive to the point of being downright explosive. I've heard reports from people that reducing their phosphorus levels in their feeding regimens significantly improved flavor while decreasing the harshness of the smoke and pulmonary irritation.
Do you know anything about that?

Nope
I've never really paid much attention to ratios listed on the bottle as they're not required to be reported accurately so long as they state the minimals.
CNS17 bloom was independently tested and was like beyond retarded inaccurate when consulting the bottle.
I don't know how much P GenHy has compared to other brands of nutes :/ I'll look into this.

Quote:
Humboldt Nutrients Gravity and PurpleMaxx (or snowstorm ultra I think is the new name for purplemaxx).
Close, PurpleMaxx used to contain snowstorm ultra, then humboldt split the two up into separate bottles. So you have the two of them separate now. The snow storm is mega cheap and amazingly awesome. I used on the Sour D plant I had and in the 2-3 weeks of feeding she was already dripping with resin. Too bad she herm'd and I had to cut her, but the little experience I had made me a believer and I'll be adding it into the mix.
Didn't get a chance to properly use gravity but will this run, all I hear is good things about it.

The snow storm was 12 dollars for an 8 oz bottle. It's max recommended dose is 2 ml/gal. It doesn't sound like much but you're supposed to feed with every watering, so if you feed daily and/or use large volumes of water you'll go through a little bottle easy in the course of a flowering period. I think it works out to be around 36 bucks a quart.
Still, it's relatively cheap and from what I've seen and read, really effective.
