Genetics importance?
    #347534 - 01/14/10 12:07 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I was under the impression that regardless of genetics, marijuana could be cultivated to be a fairly decent crop. However; someone I usually regard with a high amount of trust in this topic told me that it isn't.

So I ask this how much does genetics have a role? I have read guides that say the schwagiest of schwagtastic weed can be raised to really good weed if done right.

I'm sure I am going to be told to go to a guide or something, but I want peoples answers. Not some documented answer, or some old thread that has a relevant answer. Because I just want to be told, how much of a role they play. If I grow a schwag seed hydro is it going to be bomb, or is it going to be well groomed shit?

I honestly would of just called them a dumb shit if it wasn't who it was.

well look at it this way. if your mom had feed you really good food growing up and made you exercise every day do you think you'd grow up to be Kobe Bryant? genetics are important to dictate the total potential within the organism, but the upbringing dictates how that potential is reached.

in other words, both are important. shitty genetics can be good weed with good cultivation conditions, but never fantastic weed. likewise, fantastic genetics can grow up to be michael phelps if the conditions are right, but it can also grow up to be a drunken bum on the corner. it's sort of a grab bag. if your shitty bag of weed is good weed that was poorly grown then you can grow amazing weed with the seeds. if your shitty bag of weed is terrible weed that was grown really well then you likely won't see any improvement with good cult techniques

yes. a vast majority of the time your shitty weed is from decent-good genetics that was grown under really poor conditions. I doubt ever world class genetics, but farmers notice if their yields etc aren't up to par, so likely it's at least decent genetics grown poorly.

Ok, now just cause it's brick weed doesn't mean that is is shit weed it could be killer grown shitty. Now if the genetics are bad then it doesn't matter how you grow it it's gonna suck. Maybe taste better and look nicer but if the genetics of the plant are low THC then there is nothing that can be done to raise the THC.
Would be like trying to change your eye color just by changing the way you live your life or the way you eat. May be better for ya in the long run but it won't change your eye color cause that is determined by your genetics.

Crappy example but it works.

Interesting analogies posted here.  I had some brickweed that I suspect came from mexico and I grew it out and got a decent product out of it.

IDK if the first pic was just good genetics grown as ditch weed or what, but when grown out and given good care/attention and love it developed into a great smoke that lasted me about 6 months.

yep, perfect example furrowed. great genetics were grown poorly for the stuff you bought, but then once you gave them some TLC they turned into a beautiful plant
