Rubber Mulch !?!?

I've been looking for a lightweight and inexpensive grow medium for an outdoor hydro setup, and I saw Rubber mulching from walmart made from recycled stuff. I'm thinking one could grow out of it, does anyone have any information whether this would work or not!?

I have an outdoor drip system/aquaponic setup and I use verm and perlite and it rocks hard.

I thought of using verm and perlite, but the setup I am doing is on my patio roof. SO it might be too lightweight for the wind. I also plan on doing an ebb and flow, completely electricity free by hoisting a 55 gallon resevoir up to roof level a couple times a day. If I find that rubber mulch is no good, I'm probably going to go with a spongerock/sand/gravel mix. Anyone hear bout rubber mulch !? that would make my opeation golden.

I know for certain that mycelium and fungus that will devlop in your sub can break it down and release chemicals into your plants.

sub? What?! I didn't think that rubber mulching would provide an environment for fungus, especially since its only wet for short periods of time. Would you please elaborate?

Well if its humid outside and you irrigate it wont evaporate and that can breed fungi which can break down the rubber.

hmmm.. maybe a rubber mulch/sponge rock mixture. I really don't expect fungi to grow because I'd be watering it 3 maybe 4 times a day. The bag said it was safe, but the thought of chemicals being leeched into the plants is serious stuff.

Im a researcher and a few years back I did a project on this with several types of fungi and all consumed and spit out some pretty nasty chemicals back into the soil. I guess if you do that you should be good.

Ya sure man.
DJ_avocado: You will not have mold problems with the mulch. In fact, from my understanding - rubber mulch is sometimes used specifically to counter mold and fungus growth as well as to fight off insect activity.
However, I can't say much for it's water retention capabilities or it's airy-ness. Rubber mulch is really meant to be something you put over soil. To use it as a hydro medium, I'm not sure it will work the best. Specifically because I have a feeling it doesn't allow a lot of air to pass through, nor do I think it holds moisture particularly well.
Thats why in general, people use hydro pebbles, verm or perlite. Those mediums are able to retain lots of moisture for the roots while allowing plenty of oxygen to pass through.
I couldn't imagine perlite or verm costs much more than rubber mulch.

Yo Spency, I said that I have had fungi breakdown and consume rubber and petroleum, I didnt say it would speciffically attack rubber mulch since I was not sure as to its water retention capibilities.

Yeah ok, so what. There's a special kind of fungi for pretty much everything on the planet, from plastic to newspaper, from gasoline to rubber.
I'm sure there's fungi that grows on hydro pebbles as well as verm or perl.
My point is, it's not a relevant consideration because that kind of fungi (the kind that eats rubber) is pretty rare if I'm not mistaken and through proper maintenance, totally preventable.

I'm guessing the rubber is cause you want to cut cost and not buy the hydroton or geolite. No prob two things that will get pretty much just as good a results and I've used both. Garden lava rocks the black or the red ones. (I mixed em cause it just looked cool)
Wanna go really cheap then broken up bricks or clay flower pots will work.

hmmm...I see thanks very much. I like that idea of using cinder as a grow medium. It seems a bit messy and heavy though. I was thinking....
6 rows of 6 plants, each row is an uncut 1/2 PVC pipe running through one gallon pots. I'm going to use a dremel to cut slits along the pvc pipe inside the gallon pots and then silicone the holes and gaps though. I'm so excited because more and more sprouts are popping up and lookin real healthy. I think I'm going to use cinder rocks and sponge rocks as a medium though. The sun is returning for another glorious year.
