i prefer to tie down rather than trim, you keep the plant whole while still increasing branching.
check out my post in this thread here

Thanks for the help. When you say within a few days the plant will be growing upright again does this mean from the apex of the curve you create by bending it over?
Does the 'old' top of the plant stop growing or will it continue to grow towards the ground?
Thanks in advance.

yes, the plant will turn upwards from the bend to seek out the sunlight again. branching increases because of the temporary loss of sunlight to the upper leaves, the plant "thinks" it has been topped. the top will continue to grow and produce your nice main cola, which you would lose via topping.
It is also a good way to maximize surface area and light exposure, which means faster growth.

That's great! Thanks. So if I tie some string just under the top of the plant, and tie it slightly just under the bottom leaves I'm golden? Just measured her: 37cm. Good time to tie or should I wait a week?

yup
37cm sounds like a good place to start. you can do this multiple times as it reaches new heights. i do it to the branches when they are big enough too, except it's more of a pulling and spreading out than bending down.
by bending the stem around you should get a good idea of how much further it would take to snap. use this as a guide to how far you pull her down. even if the stem collapses and "folds," the plant will be fine after a week or so, and will actually make a cool wooden knot around the break. I've accidentally split stems right in two, with a visible hole clean through, and the plant went right on growing on. some people do this on purpose to make fatter stems that they believe increases water transport, but i wouldn't go that far unless i have a fair number to experiment on.
post pics when you've gone through with it!

as is the way with almost every single message board out there. Eventually all the good members leave and become replaced by morons. DOA was always good for a laugh and free mixes.

i found some old pics from 2003 of a plant i tied down. you can see some of the strings if you look close.
you can see the main stem on the left. the rest are branches trained into a SOG
