The Future of Cannabis

I thought this would make for an interesting topic of discussion. With the advent of decoding our own human genome it's only a matter of time before it's done with cannabis. What does this really mean? What would we be able to accomplish with this information and technology applied to the further development of the plant. Can we force evolution to better suit our needs now? What's this plant capable of?

Well- mapping a genome is a huge project. This will not be done with cannabis until long after it is legalized, which could be... ? I see a worse future for cannabis. It is somewhat pessimistic, but I think that after the plant is legalized people will start to manufacture synthetic cannabinoids and those will surpass the plant itself in popularity. Just my thoughts. Maybe we will look back in 20 years and I can say that I told you so.
Very interesting topic btw.

The level of activity and discussion in this thread concerns me a bit. And the following passage should be read by everyone!
Quote:
As cannabis enthusiasts we should also be Cannabis conservationists, we must fight the further amendment of plant patent laws to include Cannabis, and initiate programs immediately to collect, catalogue, and propagate vanishing strains. Cannabis preserves are needed where each strain can be freely cultivated in areas resembling native habitats. This will help reduce the selective pressure of an introduced environment, and preserve the genetic integrity of each strain. Presently such a program is far from becomming a reality and rare strains are vanishing faster than they can be saved. Only a handful of dedicated researchers, cultivators, and conservationists are concerned with the genetic fate of Cannabis. It is tragic that a plant with such promise should be caught up in an age when extinction at the hands of humans is commonplace. Responsibility is left with the few who will have the sensitivity to end genocide and the foresight to preserve Cannabis for future generations.
That's in the preface to Marijuana Botany by Robert Clarke.

I think we will see more progress from the areas of the united states that allow cultivation for medical purposes. I find this topic of great interest. Do you have any links you could toss up?

Hell if I had the money i'd be flying all over the planet, hiking through mountains and shit trying to find some local strains I could store in a seedbank...
Haven't they done this with a ton of plant species already? All locked in a giant frozen vault or something. Fuck I wish I wasn't so high otherwise I would remember what i'm talking about.
