This is like the 4th one Ive had. They do well for a week or so then just start to die. The one I currently have was doing ok until yesterday
There is only 3 stalks left standing and 1 is not completely soft and wilting over.
wtf do I need to do to grow basil? shouldnt be that hard.
the basil is placed in rockwool and is set down in some hydroton. I dont use nutes because we have well water and there are plenty in there. My other plants that are hydro are doing fine and they are just in water NOTHING else.

if it's just wilting and dying then my first guess would be not enough oxygen on the roots. are they just top watered or do you have a drip system or what?

the roots are just sitting in a cup of water. My other hydro plants are in the same condition and they are doing great.
I put hydroton in the cup to try to give the roots a little something between them but IDK if that will work

yeah maybe. I just find it hard to believe that a huge house plant can live in ONLY water but a herb cannot. ha. maybe its just not meant to be

well yeah man they're completely different plants. not all species that photosynthesize require the same conditions.
Kelp grows completely underwater in SALT water. if you try that with any terrestrial plant it'll be dead within the hour.
similarly, a huge plant like a palm tree could never live at 10,000 feet where I'm at right now. it's a tree just like the rest of them here, but it's evolutionary advantages don't deal with the stresses of altitude, they deal with the stresses of a maritime climate.

yeah but it's basil, I grow it as well (not hydroponically) and I find it to be a fairly sturdy plant. I watched this hydro tutorial a few months ago. This guy had massive amounts of basil growing in his setup. From the looks of it, it was an aeroflow. He was using GH Flora series and adding magnesium tablets.
Otherwise no clue.
