The Botany of Desire

PBS just ran this documentary. I was watching the beginning of it. They were talking about the apple and how it's changed over the years from being a fermented cider to the apple a day campaign. then they talked about how we've been breeding tulips. They talked a lot about breeding each of the plants. I was thinking about this in the context of our lovely plant, cannabis. Then it said Cannabis on the screen. Well, i spent the last 30-35 minutes getting one hell of an education. I thought I knew a fair amount about cannabis but this show has reaffirmed and solidified my desire to devote my remaining years working closely with this plant. I'm in love people!!!!!!! And watch this show!!!

I'm in love too and I haven't even grown yet. Instead I'm using this time to research as much as possible so when I get the chance to grow I can give it my all
and cannabis on PBS!? that's surprising.

Yeah, mark sounds like a pretty intelligent advocate for the plant. How can you not advocate the plant if you know the real history and impacts the plant has had on humans. We've got a very special relationship indeed.

thanks for pointin that out!
Note to Educators:
The Botany of Desire examines the human desire to alter consciousness by telling the story of cannabis, which is one of several psychoactive plants that affect our brains. This lesson focuses on another of those plants, the opium poppy, and explores the molecular structures of some of the drugs that are derived from it, such as morphine and codeine, or synthesized in labs. These drugs, which are regulated as controlled narcotics by the federal government, provide people who are sick or injured with effective pain relief, but can also lead to addiction. The purpose of this lesson is to provide tools that can help students better understand what happens when psychoactive plants alter the brain, and how the chemical compounds in those plants produce their effects. It also provides an opportunity and a forum for students to consider the consequences of intoxication. This subject of drugs and their mind-altering affects is clearly a sensitive and controversial one, not only for students but also for parents and other stakeholders in education. Therefore, we urge you to consider carefully the appropriateness of using this lesson plan in your school and community, and to have whatever discussions may be necessary before doing so.

Woah, dude. That's totally at Townsend Center for Humanities at UC Berkeley. I've been to a seminar there about Medical Ethics.
Small world.
EDIT: A good watch, too.

Thanks to this thread, I just bought The Botany of Desire off of Amazon.
Should be a good read. Michael Pollan seems like a very insightful man.

^hey, after you read it post here what you think. I was also thinking about getting it. The depth of my stupidity on the subject of Cannabis shouldn't surprise me anymore. There's sooo much to know about it.

“You see this glass bong?” asks Achaan Chaa, the Thai meditation master. “For me this glass is already broken. I enjoy it; I smoke out of it. It holds my water admirably, sometimes even reflecting the sun in beautiful patterns. If I should tap it, it has a lovely ring to it. But when I put this glass bong on the shelf and the wind knocks it over or my elbow brushes it off the table and it falls to the ground and shatters, I say, ‘Of course.’ When I understand that the glass is already broken, every moment with it is precious.”[/quote]
