You know I haven't known anyone to do this. I may do it on just one plant out of a crop to see what happens.
I curious if the yield of hash would be enough to make it fiscally viable

I've seen a breakdown of it somewhere, but the basic answer is "no" its not fiscally viable. You would have to charge UNGODLY prices for hash for it to even come close to the profit from buds.
That said, if you are a hash enthusiast, using whole plants for hash would probably give you a great quality of hash, and enough to have around for quite a while!

Many, many, many people! That question is almost naive.
Headstash is not always the only reason for growing 
Look at the economics of the "gold rush" style boom in the MMJ industries in Cali and Colorado! I don't think all those new growers are just in it to help their fellow man.
I wouldn't have brought it up except that Hawk presented the question.
Another great reason to use whole plants for hash would be if you had some kind of bud mold on a large percentage of your plants, the ice water extraction would allow you to still have some smokable product.

I do grow legally, I love Oregon for that. Doesn't change the fact that an entire crop would be a a lot of money down the drain.
I'll do a plant into bubble bags, not from my current grow but the next one sure.

plant a few acres of pot
finish/dry
alter washing machine to drain into Large bubble bags.
fill with pot and ice and run cycles until all is finished
collect hash/dry/cure
enjoy life as a pimp
and a buddy used buds only for h20. Maybe i can get a few pics. Just produced more. Burned slow. he had to get a torch.
