I've searched around (maybe not enough) and have found some information saying that to maintain a mother, she needs 18 hours of light at the minimum. I was wondering what schedule you run for your mothers and what kind of light as well. What is considered optimum?
I have some plants in early veg, but I want to build my mother/clone box now. Will CFLs cut it for that purpose? Or should I jump to T5's/T8's, or do I need another HID?

just keep your mother in veg photo period, such as 24/0 , 18/6......
nice flouros work pretty good for a descent mother......although you can pump up the power and get a MH so the plant has more energy to use to grow more vigorously, but thats your choice, and i dont know about your $$ situation.

If you already have a set location, such as room in a vegging closet or perhaps a spare cab, then maybe bonsai mothers are the way to go.
Light schedule is not important in vegging, 18 is standard, while 24 is also acceptable, just be aware that the plant would incur more stress from a light schedule switch such as 24/0 to 12/12. <-- My 2 cents
And again, as you can see in the link, Dr Penguin uses CFL's for mothers, save the MH for a bigger area or where it is better used, such as fresh rooted clones

Thanks guys. That's very helpful.
One more thing. If kept on a veg light cycle can the mother(s) still flower?

Once you change the light cycle to 12/12 it will initiate the flowering. But only then, if kept on a 24 or 18/6 it will continue to stay in vegetative stages.

I always had good luck with plain old soft white shop fluorescents. 3 of them can supply a 1000w flower room easily.
