For my system that has not been an issue, but I have trimmed the roots massively. Just hack what is clogging, and the plants should be fine.

To save them.
Exapmle.
In my current set up, my second cycle the plats out grew my set up.
They streaked and streaked during bloom. To the point there was no room, and the crop would be loss.
I took each one and had to hack the roots and plant them in soil.
To my surprise I did not loose one and they fucking loved the out doors.
I am just saying, by the time you are blooming and you have a massive root growth you probably can get away with a lot without the plant dying.

And I think by the point they are clogging you'll be more then fine to hack away without fear of damage.
