i don't even have a job. this economy's in the shitter but i'm not looking anyway. but i get somewhat of an allowance, watching over my handicapped aunt.

IT is a broad term for doing any type of work with the technology of the company. From running the network, to help desk, to writing software and designing reports used by management. It encompasses a lot of things.
How's the pay? Depends on your skill set, experience, degree, and GPA. It's also affected by things such as certifications like your MCSE.
Is it hard to find a job? Yes and no. IT people are always in demand, entry level jobs may be a bit tougher to find these days then they were in the past. IT jobs are out there, however the ones that are "easy" to get may not pay as well as the other positions in the field.
I write software for a micro company in my town. Wake up, go in to work, write code for 9 hrs, and go home. It is an awesome job though, all of my co-workers rock, and you can't beat going in to work dressed in ripped jeans and a hoodie.
