Ok, I love these guys but if your gonna use them to take care of a bug problem you have to do it as soon as you see signs of the bad bugs. Aphids, thrips (in some cases) and a few of the others like whitefly larvae cause none of these is all that fast of a breeder. Then comes the spider mite. Remember a ladybug can eat about 10 of these a day. The mite is a way faster breeder then that. Hell if you see webs you already have them in the thousands (I'm being nice here the number is higher) and that is gonna take a lot of ladybugs.

So if you already have lots of pests just put your plants in a tent and fill it with millions of ladybugs

He he he.....yeah I guess you can pull that off. Better then fishing them out of your lights. Geo-lite if you use it and anyplace they can crawl into. Cause when they get rid of the pest prob there gonna starve and die off.

A lady bug may eat 10 a day. A larva however eats up to 4000 mites over the course of 2 weeks(3?) I assume 2 as the larva stage is where most of the eating occurs and lady bugs live 2-3 weeks indoors.
I don't know if you meant a lady bug can eat 10 aphids a day. Aphids can be a considerable amount bigger than spider mites.
I'm also quoting Maximum Yield magazine. I however sourced similar information when investigating these claims.
Spidermites multiply very fucking fast, they can lay 20 eggs a day for 15-30 days and those eggs can hatch in 2 days and those baby mites can reproduce in 5days. Four generations of optimal growth is billions of spider mites. However nothing really reproduces at an optimal theoretical rate even intentionally. FYI The above figures are under conditions your plants would typically provide.
Food for thought. E.coli can multiply as often as once every 20 minutes, after a span of 24hours you would more than modestly have 80 000lbs of E.coli assuming this rate of reproduction didn't plateau.

I wonder if they would pass customs. I wouldn't mind keeping a giant supply of them if I figured out how to raise and maintain a large population.
I'm going to look into keeping predator mites and lady bugs maybe praying mantises too.

does anyone know how long it takes ladybugs to starve to death? IIRC spidermites have a 4 day rolling generational cycle so it would be nice if the ladybugs could stick around long enough to eat their children... or do you need to get several shipments of bugs to eat all of the generations?

I think they kick around longer than that. I've kept a few in my garden but never had to get them in large numbers and they seemed to have stuck around fairly long. I think they may eat non insect meals when there's nothing else around. No idea though not even going to google if they do I just suspect so.

Ladybugs don't eat fabric, plants, paper or any other household items. They like to eat APHIDS. Aphids are very small, but very destructive pest that feed on plants. (If you have rose bushes, you have probably seen aphids.) Ladybugs, while trying to hibernate in your house, live off of their own body fats. They, also, prefer a little humidity. But our homes are usually not very humid during the winter. In fact, they are rather dry causing most of your ladybug guests to die from dehydration. Occasionally, you might witness a ladybug in your bathroom getting a drink of water. Now, that's a smart lady!

I know this is an old bump but god i just love lady bugs they are soo fucking cute and shit, no but seriously I do believe lady bugs can survive a week or so with no bugs to eat. my daughter caught a few with some caterpillars last year and the lady bugs far outlived the caterpillars. wish i had payed more attention now lol
