I'm not saying Magash's response was scientific proof, but it is right.
The cutting of the leaves does nothing to speed up root development. What it DOES do is allow the plant to use energy to develop a new root system without needing to divert that energy to as much vegetative material for necessary processes such as transpiration and photosynthesis. In some cases (depending on the size of the clone) the newly developing root system cannot support the number of leaves present on the branch, and the whole clone will die...this is the reason for leaf cutting (however, if you overdo it, the whole clone will die)

Here is a great article about this concept.
Read specifically about the hormonal alterations that occur when vegetative material is removed. Additionally correlate that information to the sections regarding nutrient storage both in the root systems and in the leaves, and you can see why pruning/removal of vegetative material does NOT increase rooting speed.
