Humidity and stale air.
    #289347 - 09/30/09 07:35 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

One of the main reasons that people get bad rates is they don't exchange the air in the domes enough. This causes rot on leaves and at stem level near the cube.

Something to think of people. Mushroom chambers as cloning chambers. All those fancy little things the growers at the shroomery use to grow shrooms also do what? Keep the humidity up and some of them exchange the air in the chamber also.

Once you have the hang of it you can root any part of the plant

and it works well the normal way too.

Speaking of air exchange, with vegging and flowering plants I usually keep it around 2 exchanges per minute...I've heard  up to 5 being ideal.
What are your thoughts?

You know if you can do up to the point of windburn I'm cool with it but as long as the humidity and the heat are cool your more then fine with 2 per minute. The plants can only use co2 so fast and with 2 exchanges a minute the only issues would be humidity and heat.

Why do you cut the leaves like that?

One more question.. does it matter if you clip them
before or after taking the cutting?

why would you cut the tips before you take the clones? it wont hurt the plant but it might slow the growth a little bit depending on the timespan of when you cut the tips to when you cut the whole branch off........it helps root clones....cut the tips after you cut the branch off, then continue with your normal cloning tek. ...thats what I do,.............unless my plants roots have gotten damaged a little then clip the tips of some leaves to promote root growth.....

it gives the leaf a smaller surface area in which it can lose moisture via transpiration.  This means the plant retains more moisture, has a little bit less to deal with, and can focus on root production before growing more green.

It's not necessary, especially if the clones you're taking are small, but it's something you can do to speed up the rooting period a little bit.

My dad wil cut the leaves for the reasons Coda said or if he takes such a high number of cuttings that the leaves overlap to much.

Interesting. This sounds like it would help
in a SOG or another small perpetual harvest set up.

I'll give it a shot, I have some mono tubs that I could try this with.. Hmmm.

Thanks ALL! :bongload:

Ok guys lets use our heads a little here. Ok cutting the leaf in half is like coda said "it gives the leaf a smaller surface area in which it can lose moisture via transpiration." but in in no way speeds up rooting or promotes it. Now remember the propose of the leaves. They provide the energy to do ALL of the plants functions including growing roots. Same thing as going on the roof and chopping the solar panels in half and expecting the shit in the house to work as well as it did.

It will also help in times when the cuttings are in domes and the leaves overlap. This is the most common place by far for rot to start when taking cuttings.

I did it today to multiple clones.
They were cloned badly by a gardener before me, roots needed that extra push.
This person did not care for these plants at all!

Man..

The monotub is my favorite for cloning!!!
Can't wait to clone a ton of these different strains.
Mendo Purp, BBCD, Grapefruit Diesel, Maui Big Bud, Blackberry, Grape Kush.. the list goes on.

That's what I'm going to do tomorrow

Unless I could hear some scientific explanation for why cutting leaves would promote root growth, I think you are mistaken.

However, some plants do attempt to grow more aggressive roots when shocked or damaged.  Does weed and is this the reason for doing this to your cuttings?  Even if so, damaging a plant like that for a bit of root gain does not seem worth it.

Thanks for all the info though.

Of course I did.

Are you saying this is scientific argument that proves this either way?

Thought so...if every theory or word of mouth or "my awesome grower friend *swears* this so it must be true" was taken as definitive fact...

"Lets use our heads here" followed by statements does not make those statements any more true than the original theory.
